Wednesday June 2 #900
This Wednesday, June 2nd, is our 900th consecutive Wednesday Night and we
hope that you will join us in the celebration of the auspicious event!
Thank you for your letters
>Soyez les bienvenus.
Dear Friends,
Thank you all for your enthusiastic support of Wednesday Night #900. Without you, it would not be the marvelous event that it is - it is your ideas, your debates, your enthusiastic participation, intellectual contribution, singular perspectives and the resultant exchanges that have helped us to make it a unique weekly event for 18+ years.
Those of you who were able to be with us - and you were too numerous to count!- all know what a splendid evening it was. To the many of you who were not able to be with us, we offer a veritable, and perhaps virtual, rain cheque and in the meantime, so that you may share in a bit of the fun, go see the reports on the web site.
Obviously we will not be able this week to equal last Wednesday's extravaganza, but we do hope that you will join us for the usual topical food for thought.
Meantime, please note in your calendars that we are expecting David and Terry Jones in from Washington on the 23rd (yes, we know about the parade and also about the Westmount/Rimouski festivities - we may have a diverting suggestion). Since their departure from Ottawa, they continue to be fascinated by Canadian goings-on and will arrive full of questions.
Hoping to see you this week -
David and Diana Nicholson

Yvette Biondi -
Je vous embrasse tous les deux.

Dear David & Diana,
Congrats on your 900th! Surely you must by now be in the Guinness Book of Records, and it is one which will not be easy to better - as opposed for instance to running the fastest mile, the results of which are known in a few seconds...!
I should be back in mid-August and look forward to seeing you then.
Meilleures salutations et bravo encore,
Andre Saumier

I think I was at the first, which makes it.......16 years ago? How is Carl anyway? And whatever happened to that guy I met at your house and then lived with...what's his name?
Best to you both....and congrats.
Mon 8/20/01 11:44 AM Hi All,
This is to update you on Carl Beigie's condition. He has been in a
hospital in Toronto that specializes in stroke victims. I spoke to him
last week for the first time since his stroke. He sounded pretty good
although his speech is slightly slurred, and his mood was upbeat and
positive. He informed me that the doctors found a small hole in his heart
and he will have an operation to repair it. He says the operation is not a
major one; it is a standard procedure. After that, he will be released
from the hospital and continue his rehab as an out-patient. He is still
paralyzed on his left side, but he does have some movement.
Our former professor, Ian McLachlin, visited Carl last week in the hospital
in Toronto. He said he looked remarkably well. He said that Carl is
working with a speech therapist who has him reading Shakespeare sonnets
aloud.
Thank you all for asking about Carl, and I will update you on any future
news on his condition.

Where have all the flowers gone...I can't believe that it's 900 already.
I guess that makes me 1000. Have an appointment that night but will try
to drop by if it's not too late when we're through. All the
best.......Carmen

Congratulations on your 900th birthday - you don't look one hour tired
of it all! you are really amazing, both of you - there must be one
thousand and one nights of reasons to go on with these delights!
(though I am very sorry to miss the "Amalgamation" conversation,
whatever that is! mischief and politics, discipline or anarchy,
tout cela est bien interessant ....)
love to all of you,

I ran into Margaret LeFevbre Monday night at the Conference de Montreal
and she told me about your milestone soiree scheduled for last night.
Just wanted to add my congratulations for maintaining an island of
intelligent and civil conversation in a crazy world. It's a wonderful
tradition. My wishes for at least 900 more.
Best regards to you and your family.

Dear D&D,
The sorry part of having arrived late to the 900th gathering of the Wednesday Nighters was not the missing of a slice of cake, but missing the opportunity to express my gratitude for being allowed to be part of most of those 900 evenings.
Thank you both for:
the enjoyment of these evenings,
allowing me to learn from the guests,
permitting me to voice my opinions,
to acquire new friends,
bringing me up to date on the news which I missed,
to appreciate all the work that David puts into these evenings,
for putting up with me speaking without permission,
and MOST of all for introducing me to Nancy, who is REALLY great breakfast material !

Dear David and Diana,
sorry to skip out so early ... It was a very impressive gathering, worthy of the occasion, and I would have liked to have been able to stay and chat, and hear Susan's legendary pipes. I fear my guitar accompaniment is not up to opera, but one does what one can - like warble along with the Mayor.
I intend to take him upon his challenge to compose an anti-amalgamation song, especially if I can think of a more catchy title than 'The
anti-amalgamation song'. Although that does have a certain admirable
directness, doesn't it?
regards
George Bowser

D.T. .... thanks much for the web site lead. Terrific resource, and will
look forward to using in the future.
Too bad this site doesn't get around as much as all the virus warnings,
which lately have become quite scary, due to the REAL ones out there!
(So much for "credible sources" .. apparently they can get bamboozled too!)
Thanks again,
John Wilson
From our past
Each Wednesday it must happen that the regulars must be found,
We've got a massive list - we've got a massive list
Of intellectual pretenders who might think they are profound,
And who never would be missed - who never would be missed.
There are doctors and some lawyers who never get the joke,
There are left-wing academics, they're such dreadfully vocal folk,
The bimbo and the bombshell who must sit on either side,
The publishers and authors, please, just who will be the scribe?
The bankers and the brokers come to hear the analyst
'The fact of the matter is' that you would all be missed.
We've a very special guest tonight, it's a Beigie, if you please;
A tango dancer's coming with an environmentalist,
We've outlawed all discussion of invading killer bees
Until the Wednesday when we have the Groupe partitioniste.
The subject for that night was what to do with Montréal
At least that's what we said, until an unexpected call
Invited us to entertain the Turkish Agha Prince.
Call in the ethnic experts to give us all some hints
Bring on the builders, architects, the internationalists;
You'll find them on the list, you'll find them on the list.
Let's get involved with something new, a project to excite
We need a bigger list - we need a bigger list
Internet and CDROMs, the tekkies have it right,
We need you to assist, we need you to assist.
So assemble all the experts and a few who might be wise.
One conversation at a time, and keep the room to size,
We'll need some music, politics, a little laughter too
Pretty girls and special wine, add Bowser if not Blue.
The video's apocryphal, we really must insist
You should add it to your list, you should add it to your list.
The chairs are freshly mended, the front door will be ajar,
Your name is on the list, you really would be missed.
De rigueur, contributions of libations to the bar,
We really must insist - they truly would be missed.
On Wednesday next, the 28th, we're set to celebrate
Two years of Wednesdays had they been held every single day
Les amis of all persuasions, La Fête will start at eight
Dust off your smoking/black tie ; you must come prepared to play.
Thinker, Doer, Lesser Person , opinionated spouse,
You will be welcomed joyfully by David and The Mouse.
So fill in your agenda; other soirées please resist.
You really would be missed - you really would be missed.
