General Management

IATA & Concordia University's One Year
International Aviaton MBA Programme (IAMBA)

The IATA-Concordia University Advantage

IATA's world-wide partnership with Concordia University

The International Aviation MBA Programme was established in partnership with Concordia University in 1992 and is the only MBA Programme in the world that is endorsed by IATA.

A competitive advantage in a growing industry

With an MBA degree from Concordia University, specialising in aviation, you acquire a competitive advantage by possessing the aviation management skills needed to effectively manage and compete in this rapidly changing and growing industry.

Aviation specific curriculum

The seventeen course curriculum focuses on the needs of aviation managers. In the IATA-Concordia International Aviation MBA Programme, students learn about the latest aviation management trends, techniques and issues.

The only AACSB accredited International Aviation MBA Programme in the world

The quality of education in the Faculty of Commerce and Administration is among the best. The Faculty received AACSB accreditation from the International Association of Management Education in March 1997. It represents a certification of quality or "a seal of excellence" and has been awarded to only 332 of the 1250 business schools in North America, including Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, MIT and Wharton.

The learning environment - international and professional

Acceptance to the IATA-Concordia University International Aviation MBA Programme is limited to those aviation professionals who have at least three years of aviation related experience. The student body is highly international and the result is a rich and dynamic learning environment where participants study with and learn from other aviation pro-fessionals from around the world.

Opportunity to work in Canada

After completing the degree requirements, immigration authorities allow international students to work in Canada for up to one year to gain Canadian aviation management experience.

Tuition loans and scholarships

Regardless of citizenship, students can borrow, from a Canadian chartered bank, up to 60% of the tuition fees with a repayment period of up to five years. A limited number of scholarships are also available.

Montreal - the aviation capital of the world

Canada's aviation industry is one of the largest in the world and Montreal is home to IATA and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). As well, Montreal boasts one of the largest concentrations of aerospace manufacturers/suppliers in the world, including Air Canada, Bell Helicopter, Bombardier, CAE, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce. The International Aviation MBA Programme and its students continually benefit from the intellectual and technological infrastructure Montreal has to offer.

Admission Standards

In compliance with the Concordia University School of Graduate Studies and its AACSB Accreditation, the following criteria is required for acceptance to the IATA-Concordia University International Aviation Master of Business Administration
Programmes:
· An undergraduate degree from a reputable university, or equivalent qualifications
· Satisfactory performance on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)

INTRODUCTIONS

Diana Thébaud started the evening by introducing Sonia Singh from Air India and pointing out that tonight we had three students in the Concordia MBA in Aviation program who come from three different continents. Joining Sonia were returnees, René from Venezuela and David from Kenya - a good measure of how international this programme and our city's universities are.

HIGHER EDUCATION AND GOVERNMENT FUNDING

The universities are a regulated industry (especially here in Québec), and there are no incentives to optimize the operation. Fees should be deregulated, as has been done in some Ontario University programs.

The newly announced funding will help, but is not sufficient. The investment of approximately $1 billion is over 5 years, starting with $100 million in year 1, $120 million in year 2, $180 million in year 3 and $300 in year 4. For universities like McGill, this translates into too little, too late. McGill will have a small deficit of $26.5 million, but it has over $200 million in deferred maintenance, and needs funding for some 100 new professors over the next 2 years. All universities are looking for ways to raise the fees to cover the costs. At present the provincial government cuts their subsidy if Québec universities raise their fees. Concordia and McGill have been looking at ways around this situation by offering courses out of province, where they can charge the full fees. For an MBA, the fees should be at least 25,000 USD per year. McGill has such an MBA program in Japan. Students who have graduated from this program or the Concordia MBA in Aviation are being snapped up for annual salaries around the $100,000 mark. [This only true in a few cases .. most leave bankrupt!]

INDIA

Sonia Singh
Sonia commented that in India there is central control, while agricultural management is delegated to the individual Indian states. In India consultation does take place regarding budgets preparation, but only with industry.

India will be overtaking China in population in the next couple of years. The BJP government may be moving to make India more religious. 88% are Hindu, but there is a great diversity of other ethnic groups. In the Indian provincial states there is more a feudal system of government.

Fri 2/16/01 12:07 AM
My dearest Diana and David,

I have been an infrequent visitor to my mail box - though you have been in my thoughts.
What have I been upto.
November saw me slowing my pace to take into account all the interdependenciesin my life- sharing a car with my parents, a house and hot water-breaking back into Indian time- food feasts- solitary time- overcoming a longing for Montreal.
December was fun- the weather cooled - we walked briskly on red soil at the Asiad stadium each mirning and sauntered through the beautiful ,tree lined Lodhi garden each evening, with the old tombs of the Lodhi emperors outlined against the deepening sky.
Decmber was also Bombay- Christmas and the Midnight Mass, with a beautiful choir singing ,under an open sky.
Visits to Air India Headquarters- meetings and discussions- getting a sense of where they are/we are at.
January was the hills- the mountain ranges of the Himalayas viewed from Landour,Mussourie, where there is a famous school called Woodstock -which was initially for Missionary children in Asia.
Long days in my parents small garden in Delhi- the table and books spread under a tree- leaves falling- friends dropping in for lunch- walks. Dinners. Now February< and I am in Poona-my time off is drawing to a close- I rejoin Air India on the first of March.
I hope to see you in summer in Montreal and in India next January- you know have apicture of what awaits you.
With much love and gratitude,
Love, Sonia

Try a small test also try

A movie of the Cirque du Soleil you select; all 6 clips are fun.

David presented Rex Murphy on "Who wants to be a millionaire". It was vintage Rex Murphy, clever, articulate and funny. For many, the weekly Rex Murphy clip is as good as "Yes, Minister".see Video
