The Character Map characters are made by depressing either ALT key, then typing the following numbers - using the numeric keypad on the right side of keyboard. For example: ALT + 0200 = È  The letter appears after the Alt key is released.

Both three and four digit systems exist and are shown in the three charts below. More on the four digit combinations can be found in Start/Program/Accessories/Character Map. Help is available in Start/Find - then type character map. Windows 95 seems to accept either the three or four digit system.
