Friday 14 September 2007 Lovers in the ’60s Take a Magical Mystery Tour
From its first moments, when a solitary dreamer on a beach turns to the camera and sings, unaccompanied, the opening lines of the Beatles’ song “Girl,” Julie Taymor’s ’60s musical fantasia, “Across the Universe,” reveals its intention to use the Beatles’ catalog to tell two stories at once, one personal, the other generational. That young man, Jude (Jim Sturgess), is a cheeky Liverpool dockworker with a twinkle in his eye. He quickly emerges as a winsome vocal composite of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, with a personality to match.

Thursday 26 April 2007 Monday will be the 24th anniversary of the death of George Balanchine. For many dancegoers, the ending of a career so bountiful seemed the worst calamity to have befallen the art form since the death of Diaghilev in 1929. But far more Balanchine ballets are performed today than during his lifetime, by companies from San Francisco to St. Petersburg. Meanwhile, New York City Ballet preserves the main corpus of his choreography, while the School of American Ballet guards the flame of his academic teaching.

National Ballet's Rex Harrington
The National Ballet of Canada's 2003-04 season marks Rex Harrington's 20th anniversary with the company, as well as his final season as principal dancer. As Canada's premier male ballet dancer prepared to star in Onegin – arguably his signature work – in November 2003, CBC News Online spoke with his dance partners and the understudies looking to take up his mantle. While the world of dance is decidedly a physical realm, a male dancer needs to have more than good looks and a strong, healthy body. Gentlemanly manners, a sense of artistry, sensitivity to his partner and good communication skills are also traits to possess.
