... this note from his former McGill secretary along to you. In early May, Carl was
found on the floor of his apartment. We had become worried when he didn't
show up for his first lecture in a summer course and the next day someone
from the faculty went to check up on him (thank God!), he had suffered a
stroke.
I hope all is well with you, and yours.
Warmest regards, Helen Van Eyk [vaneyk@management.mcgill.ca]
I would like to update you on Carl Beigie's condition since the last news
in August. He is now recovering at home in Toronto after five months of
rehab at the Riverdale Hospital. He is still paralyzed on his left side,
but his movement has been improving at a noticeable pace. After using a
wheelchair to get around, he is now able to walk with the help of a cane.
Carl phoned me on Monday, Nov. 12 to let me know that he was finally going
to have the operation to repair the hole in his heart. The operation,
which he said is fairly routine, was to be performed on Thursday, Nov. 15
and he was supposed to be back home the next day. He also told me he had
carcinoma on his face and that it has been removed successfully.
Carl sounds really good. His speech is improving each time I speak to him,
and he is in very good spirits. He is really touched to hear about all the
students, colleagues, and friends who have asked about him; I have passed
all your messages on to him.
If anyone would like to send him a card or note, or would like to phone
him, just let me know and I will give you his coordinates.
Thank you for asking about Carl, and I will keep you informed of any
further developments on his condition.

Hi All,
This is to update you on Carl Beigie's condition. He has been in a
hospital in Toronto that specializes in stroke victims. I spoke to him
last week for the first time since his stroke. He sounded pretty good
although his speech is slightly slurred, and his mood was upbeat and
positive. He informed me that the doctors found a small hole in his heart
and he will have an operation to repair it. He says the operation is not a
major one; it is a standard procedure. After that, he will be released
from the hospital and continue his rehab as an out-patient. He is still
paralyzed on his left side, but he does have some movement.
Our former professor, Ian McLachlin, visited Carl last week in the hospital
in Toronto. He said he looked remarkably well. He said that Carl is
working with a speech therapist who has him reading Shakespeare sonnets
aloud.
Thank you all for asking about Carl, and I will update you on any future
news on his condition.

Heading up the newly reconstituted organization was the brilliant young economist Carl E. Beigie. In his youth a preacher in his native United States, Beigie became the eloquent public face of HRI. Together with a talented group of researchers that included Gail Cook, Judith Maxwell, Joshua Mendelsohn, Caroline Pestieau, Richard Shaffner, and Gennifer Sussman, Beigie greatly expanded the scope of HRI’s research and publications programs. Energy, fiscal policy, labour policy, and monetary policy were just some of the new areas in which the Institute’s expertise began to be applied.
Wednesday-Night
Every Wednesday since 1982 ...their first special guest was Dr. Carl Beigie who was truely a VIP and gave the WEDNESDAY NIGHT SALON its beginning and rarely missed a night in over 18 years.
Taken from the Salon Story
...
She (The Chief Wife) did not know the dismal science, nor the ways of the market place nor the money changers so she did conspire with the Chief Wazir, the Caliph Carl, who was held in highest esteem at seats of learning throughout the land and together they did enact a clever plan to entertain their Ruler with weekly pageants wherein the company was selected from among the wisest in the land and would meet for gentle discourse amidst flagons of refreshing juices.
Taken from the 1001 nights
We of the Wednesday Night Salon have our own tales of Survivors, - 20 years' worth, - from the earliest days in 1981 when a half dozen individuals gathered around the dining room table for late dinner with Carl Beigie.. The dinner concept did not survive.
Soon, we progressed to the living room for a restrained gathering, a glass or two of wine and some fine discussions of the Market in the company of brokers and economists - and always Carl Beigie.

The Nicholsons --Soiree of Wednesday --August 2, 1995
--the 700 anniversary of these consecutive soirees.
The special guest for the occasion was his "Honor the Mayor of Montreal

Monsieur Pierre Bourque".
Before I give a short account of the evening, I would like to write a few
words on Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson. Diana and David as known to their friends
and guests. The anniversary date is always a good opportunity to look back
and view the events from a different point of view i.e. in hindsight. When
David and Diana started these unique soirees --long long long time
ago...almost 14 years ago...their first special guest was Dr. Carl Beigie
