Professional-quality Bidirectional Analog/Digital Video Conversion
The ADVC300 is the ultimate bidirectional analog to digital video converter unit for the video enthusiast. Featuring high-quality image enhancement technology including digital noise reduction and image stabilization using Line Time Base Correction (LTBC), ADVC300 instantly cleans, stabilizes and preserves old VHS and Hi8 videos in clean DV format. Supporting Windows® and Mac OS®, ADVC300 is compatible with all widely used video editing applications including Canopus EDIUS, Final Cut Pro®, Avid Xpress® DV and Adobe® Premiere® Pro. $450 2004 canopus.com downloads

A VCD, with a maximum resolution of 352x240 lines, is good enough for duplicating 250-line video formats (VHS or 8mm tape, for example), but if you're capturing from a format with more lines (SVHS, Hi8, and such), you'll lose quality unless you go with 480x480 SVCD.

We highly recommend spending the extra money on DVD-recordable to avoid resolution and compatibility problems. DVD-R/+R can be played in nearly every drive and player sold in the last couple of years, and its superior 720x480 maximum resolution can cope with even the highest-resolution home-video formats. Sure it's more expensive, but these are precious memories, right?

Friday 05 January 2007 LG to sell dual-format DVD player

LOS ANGELES — LG Electronics said Wednesday it plans to sell a DVD player that will play both warring high-definition DVD formats.
The first dual-format high-def player will play discs in the HD DVD format, which is backed by a consortium headed by Toshiba Corp., as well as the rival Blu-ray format, backed by a group led by Sony Corp.
The LG unit will be unveiled at next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, LG said. Details, including pricing and availability, will become available then, the company said.
The two DVD formats have been battling for market share since being introduced last year. Both are expected to get a boost this year as more studios release films in the formats and more players become available.
But the formats are incompatible, forcing consumers to choose. Studios and electronics makers have said the resulting format war would delay widespread adoption of high-def DVDs, which contain sharper images and extra features not possible with standard definition disc.
LG, based in South Korea, said it expects its dual-format player to "end the confusion and inconvenience of competing high-definition disc formats."

The two formats offer various advantages for manufacturers and content providers, but the two IT industry giants said the HD DVD format is more suitable for PCs, and particularly laptops. HD DVD drives are designed to build on existing DVD hardware, so that they can take up less space, making them ideal for slim form factors, supporters argue.

DVD Shrink does not burn DVDs! The output from DVD Shrink is saved as files on your hard drive, which you can then burn to a DVD-R using separate burning software, such as the software provided with your DVD-R drive.
Most DVD titles are designed to prevent you from making copies. The first preventative measure is encryption. Most DVD titles are encrypted, which prevents you from either copying them to your hard drive, or if you manage to do so, being able to play the resulting files. DVD Shrink overcomes this problem with built-in decryption algorithms.
The next problem is not so easy. Most DVD video titles are simply too large to fit, without modification, onto a single recordable DVD-R disk. DVD Shrink overcomes this problem by modifying or "shrinking" the data from your original DVD.

Thursday 20 January 2005 Not Now for High-Definition DVD: Both Blu-ray and HD-DVD are ready to go, and vendors were showing off drives and players for each. Alas, with two competing standards—and high-profile announcements of support for each—neither will take off over the next 18 months. Even though current DVDs look a bit pale on today's modern HDTVs, don't expect anything substantial until late 2006. And if the warring factions can't get their act together, it could stretch out into 2008 or later. To quote Bugs Bunny, "What a bunch of maroons."

October 20, 2003 C|net Sony Electronics announced Monday two new rewritable DVD drives that can read and write to DVD+R media at 8X speeds. The drives support the DVD+RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW formats--the DVD+RW format includes support for DVD+R media. The $270 DRU-530A and the $350 DRX-530UL can fill an entire DVD+R disc in about 10 minutes, according to the company, and support DVD+RW and DVD-R recording at 4X speed as well as DVD-RW at 2X. The internal drive, the DRU-530A, will be available in December, and the external drive, the DRX-530UL, will be available in January.

Also coming down the pike are blue-laser (also known as Blu-ray) drives and discs that can pack 27GB of data onto a single-sided disc, but don't hold your breath. Expected to cost thousands of dollars when they're released in 2005 or 2006, blue-laser drives will be capable of recording, rewriting, and playing huge, high-definition television files.

DVD+RW video recorders allow users to add, delete or divide titles, overwrite titles in whole or in part, create or modify play lists and make other changes without losing compatibility with existing DVD players, unlike other formats. DVD Recorders

Thursday Dec 9, 2004 The DVD recorder (no not the kind you buy for a PC, but a new genre that sits comfortably amid your home A/V components and allows you to burn DVDs from TV shows or movies. as low as $300 in Canada) is preferable to a PVR and VCR on several counts. They offer higher quality recording — approximately DVD quality audio and video (though longer recording times are available at lower quality settings if you prefer) Discs are cheap — buy them by the 100 for about $50, thus they are about 50 cents each — and getting cheaper. Discs are much easier to store than cumbersome and not terribly durable VHS tapes. DVD recorders are easy to operate, essentially identical to a VCR, with some important advantages, including the ability to eliminate commercials from recordings. They are a proven technology, having evolved from CD and DVD burners that have served computer users so well for nearly a decade.
But wait for the Biger Media disks

Tuesday Nov 30, 2004 ts

The movies you buy this Christmas will always work in the DVD player you currently own. But today's players likely won't be able to play all of the DVDs released next year. And the next generation of DVD players — set to hit the North America in late 2005 — might not play your existing DVD collection either
Toshiba Corp. announced yesterday that four movie studios will use an upcoming DVD format known as High Definition (HD) DVDs. .... standard known as Blu-ray also has big backers, including Sony Corp., the Hewlett-Packard Development Company and Dell Inc.
Current DVDs use low-frequency red lasers that can only write 4.7 GB (gigabytes) of data to a single-layer disc. Both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats use blue lasers which can record more data per disc than their red counterparts methods.
Blu-ray can hold 25 GB on a single-layer disc, while the HD DVD equivalent can hold 15 GB. Unfortunately, the DVD player you use today won't know what to do with a disc recorded with a blue laser, whether it's Blu-ray or HD DVD.

We don't have enough pages in this magazine to list every DVD player hack, but most of them focus on defeating region/ country codes or changing the codes. Other hacks add the ability to play unsupported file or disc types. Though the media companies want their content to be as restricted as possible, DVD player manufacturers seem to be adhering more to the letter than to the spirit of the law, by making their players as flexible as possible while technically complying with the international agreements. Thus, the undocumented features are hidden away under layers of error messages, button presses, and weird on-screen messages.

Pc The digital-imaging industry is very unlikely to drop support for JPEG for a long time, even after better things come along. Store at least one copy of all your photos as a JPEG. JPEG uses lossy compression, which means that a decompressed image is not exactly the image you started with. Shoot and store your photos at the highest quality and resolution your camera allows. If you plan to manipulate your images, convert them to a lossless format—such as TIFF—while you edit, then save them back to JPEG when you are finished. TIFF files are typically huge, however, so use this format sparingly.
Store your JPEGs and TIFFs on your hard drive in read-only format, so you don't unintentionally overwrite them. Set files to Read only by right-clicking on them in Windows Explorer, selecting Properties, and checking the labeled box.
Store your JPEGs and TIFFs on your hard drive in read-only format, so you don't unintentionally overwrite them. Set files to Read only by right-clicking on them in Windows Explorer, selecting Properties, and checking the labeled box.
For digital audio, the most content by far is stored in MP3 format. There may be advantages to other audio formats, but MP3 has the widest support. If you want an uncompressed format, WAV is the most widespread.
For archiving digital movies, look to Hollywood, which supports MPEG-2 overwhelmingly. Some digital-editing packages output to MPEG-1, a close brother to MPEG-2, and any player that supports MPEG-2 can also read MPEG-1. What about the emerging MPEG-4 and JPEG 2000? It's too early to tell how successful and widespread these standards will be. more can be reasonably assured that there will be devices to read CDs for many years to come. What about DVD? Not yet. The standards war between the DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW camps has yet to be fully resolved.

...The simplest duplicators, selling for as little as $199, are the size of a large shoe box and contain two CD drives: a ``source'' drive where you insert the disc you want to copy and a ``target'' drive where you insert a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc. No computer is required. the DVD DigiCopier (model AEDVDCOP4UM) from Addonics Technologies (www.addonics.com) of San Jose, introduced earlier this year for $659. but not protected discs see also Alera Technologies (www.aleratec.com), e3 Works (www.e3works.com), Ez Clone (www.ezclone.com), Ez Dupe (www.ezdupe.com), Kanguru Solutions (www.kanguru.com) and Kano Technologies (www.kanotechnologies.com).
able to copy a DVD containing an hour of home video footage onto a DVD-R in 17 minutes
If you only burn a few CDs or DVDs each month, it's cheaper and not much more of a hassle to use an internal or external burner attached to a PC. Many duplicators, including the DigiCopier, will also connect to a PC for those times when you want to copy files from the computer's hard drive.

c|net Microsoft Windows Media Player "Nothing Comes Close to WMP"
The best video format so far is WMV. In fact it is going to be use by the big studios. Movies have never look so good and no one can deni it. New DVDs will be release with this format starting with BMW films Terminator 2, Disney's Dinosaurs and so on. Ah and they're gonna be HD about 7 times more resolution than a DVD and still there will be space for more extras that what we get right now. If we talk about sound. Check out WMA9 pro. With its 5.1 soround or just WMA pro or wma9. PEOPLE welcome to the future of video and sound. GET USE TO IT... this is good. (I am not a big fan of Microsoft, but I have to admit that this one the pull it out very good). Before you download this software make sure that you have a desent machine. NOTE: Having windows XP enhances the experience with this software a lot...
"Thi si one of the worst media players available"
It is a bloated slow media player, that has annoying copy protection, and uses microsoft's horrible wma/wmv. It also has problems playing some commercial cds, and has horrible visulizations. Use Winamp 2.9 or Foobar 2000 for a free high quality player, and rip in Ogg Vorbis for High Quality audio.

Monday, May 5, 2003 Create Your Own DVDs Any recording medium that can hold that much information is capable of an awful lot of uses. Compounding the problem is the number of forms the DVD has taken: DVD-R that is compatible with most DVD players and writable; and DVD+R and DVD+R/RW that have write once and rewrite capability. DVD-RAM is a new form that functions like a 4.7GB hard drive or a 9.4GB variant if it’s loaded with double sided DVD-RAM disks. The DVD-RAM disks are overwritable 100,000 times. Note that speed of reading potential is variable with some disks and drives capable of running at 8X CD-RW speed and others going up to 32X.
Veteran computer book author Brian Underdahl takes the reader though the forest of DVD variations, focusing on making videos rather than using DVDs for data storage. The input systems are mostly cameras or t.v.s with the addition of a video tuner card. If making sophisticated home movies is your plan and if you want to store them on DVDs, this is your book. Clear, intelligent, and reasonably priced, it’s a valuable accessory to any writeable DVD drive.

Monday, March 31, 2003 ap Adobe enters DVD market With a suggested retail price of $549 (U.S.) per copy, the Encore software isn't meant for the mass market.
The program promises to create slick DVDs for video entrepreneurs and aficionados, a segment that falls into a cross-section sometimes called "prosumers."
With PC-compatible DVD recorders now available for $300 to $500 (U.S.), more people are trying to create their own discs on their computers. The declining prices are one reason the number of DVD recorders in homes and businesses is expected to rise from 6 million in 2002 to 16 million by the end of this year, according to industry research firm IDC.
Recordable DVDs are becoming a more popular media format because their storage capacity is up to 28 times greater than recordable CDs. .... Rival products include Pinnacle Systems' Impression-DVD Pro, with a suggested retail price of $399, and Ulead's DVD Workshop, with a suggested retail price of $495.
The DVD industry has been one of tech's few bright spots, growing faster than any consumer electronics segment in history. About 40 million U.S. households own DVD players and millions more are expected to join the crowd this year with the prices for basic players now below $100.

Tuesday Feb 25, 2003 The DVD+RW Alliance announced late Monday that Microsoft had joined its ranks, adding that the software giant will also have a seat on its policy-setting team with representatives from Dell Computer, Hewlett-Packard, Mitsubishi Chemical/Verbatim, Philips, Ricoh, Sony, Thomson and Yamaha. The DVD+RW Alliance is a group of companies that promotes and develops the DVD+RW format.

The rival DVD Forum, which includes Apple Computer, Hitachi, NEC, Pioneer, Samsung and Sharp, advocates the DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW formats. The two sides have been competing against one another to push their formats to dominate the market. http://www.globetechnology.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030225.gtdvd/GTStory

Adaptec DuoConnect
Pros: USB 2.0 and FireWire; 5 years of warranty; internal port for front panel hub.
Cons: Software available on manufacturer's site only.
Verdict: The $57 Adaptec DuoConnect gives you big bang for the buck by offering 4 USB 2.0 and 3 FireWire ports. price deals
Microsoft began supporting FireWire by supplying a patch on Windows 98 SE. From Windows ME on, every MS operating system comes with built-in FireWire support. You will see that Windows 2000 and XP already have robust support for FireWire networking (direct connect two computers via a FireWire cable), video cameras and storage devices.
Since only Windows XP is the first to get USB 2.0 driver, support for Hi-Speed USB 2.0 is rather sketchy on Windows platforms for now; MacOS support is non-existent at the moment. To make those Hi-Speed USB ports running at 480Mbps, you have to install the driver from Adaptec website. It is, however, recommended that you check for the latest version before installing the ones on the CD. There’s also a nifty utility called USBControl which graphically displays your peripherals in a tree diagram and all other relevant information for troubleshooting purposes. There’s no FireWire equivalent though
Touted as a DV editing solution, DuoConnect comes with MGI VideoWare for video editing and MyDVD for DVD authoring. Mac users are advised to get iMovie 2 software. Coupled the DuoConnect with a DVD-R drive, you can make your own DVD or VCD movies. The package also includes a 6-pin to 4-pin FireWire cables fro DV camcorder connectivity.
Maxtor Hi-Speed USB 2.0 hard drives lagged behind FireWire hard drives by a large margin. We attribute this to ISD300 bridge chip of the hard drives, which has a maximum sustained transfer rate of 18MBps. You can expect future models with more efficient bridge chips to perform better.
Between Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and FireWire, the latter is apparently more established in terms of software support and industry acceptance. However, since USB 2.0 is still in its infancy, there are still a lot of improvements to be made before the high-speed standard catches on.
The Bottom Line
For a card that only retails for $57 after $20 rebate, the Adaptec DuoConnect saves both a precious PCI slot and money while delivering the best connectivity options for external devices.

DVD's now dominate a Blockbuster at 51st Street and Eighth Avenue in Manhattan; videotapes are relegated to the back of the store.Revolt in the Den: DVD Sends the VCR Packing to the Attic
Digital videodiscs and their players, which five years ago were not much more than the toys of gadget-lust sufferers, have now taken full wing as a true pop-culture phenomenon.
And for the first time, DVD sales have surpassed those of videocassettes, even though DVD players are in only about a third of American households, compared with a saturation of more than 90 percent for videocassette players.
"It is the most successful home entertainment device in history," said Warren Lieberfarb, president of Warner Home Video. "In five years, it has gone from zero to 30 million households, and a quarter of those have more than one DVD player. Nothing else has come close to doing that in such a short time, not CD's, not VCR's, not personal computers, not even television itself."
A guess is that within 24 months it will become very difficult to find any titles in video, other than family films.

May 2002 Philips takes the top spot with the DVDRW208. This DVD+RW drive can store 4.7GB of data on a single-sided rewritable disc. The drive can also write CD-R and CD-RW media as well providing good flexibility. The main down side of DVD+RW at the moment is it only supports rewritable discs, which are more expensive than single-use writable media. Although there is the possibility of DVD+R emerging in the near future, it’s not currently available.

Performance wise, the DVDRW208 was the fastest when it came to burning DVDs. Copying the February 02 edition of PC Advisor cover DVD – a total of 3GB – took just 17 minutes 58 seconds. The resulting disc would also happily play in a Philips consumer DVD player. Copying PC Advisor’s October 00 cover CD-ROM – a total of 344MB – took four minutes four seconds on CD-R and four minutes 53 seconds on CD-RW. saw it at $348us

Philips has bundled Ahead Nero 5.5 for data disc creation and Sonic MyDVD for video authoring, providing everything you need to get going straight away. The DVDRW208 combines performance with a low price of £330, winning ith the Best Buy award this month. also more DVD Future Multi-Purpose and DVDs can store as much as 4.7 to 17 GBs.
