Playing In The Big Leagues
Conservatory piano student Jan Lisiecki couldn’t believe his luck when Ottawa’s National Arts Centre (NAC) invited him to appear as a soloist in its 2006 fundraising event featuring world-class headline musicians Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax.
Despite feeling a little star-struck (not surprising, since he was then just 11-years-old), Jan received a standing ovation for his performance of two Chopin etudes and a Rachmaninoff prelude. “I felt very honoured and excited to meet the musicians and play for them,” he said.
This was Jan’s fifth performance at the NAC. Last year, he played at celebrations of Mozart’s 250th birthday at the invitation of NAC Music Director Pinchas Zukerman. He also performed for Governor General Michaelle Jean at Rideau Hall’s 2006 Canada Day celebrations.
BRAVO to Hans and Janet Black, who co-chaired the very successful McGill Chamber Orchestra’s gala evening at Théâtre Maisonneuve on April 15. The performance by 13-year old pianist Jan Lisiecki was brilliant and the entire evening was a triumph. The Orchestra is indeed fortunate to have Hans as its Chairman.

As you know, Paul, it is all over the world. It's global. It's certainly all over Europe and in a huge way in the last, two, three weeks, enormous bailouts on a per capita basis, much larger than what we've had in the United States. Eastern Europe I think is a big worry, Hungry, Poland, some of the former CIS countries, the former Soviet Union, Ukraine, I think, is an issue and finally, I'll mention Korea, which we're very concerned about. Korea is one of the top 10 economies in the world and there seem to be some big issues there with the currency and the banking system.
We think the U.S. is actually ahead of the curve. For all of the criticism that we hear, I think we've done the right things here in the banking system over the last two, three weeks, got off to a slow start, but I think we're getting it right. It may be. We're seeing a lot of values. We think this market in many sectors is really cheap, in healthcare and certain technology companies, a few energy companies even. We think we're going see an enormous rally at some point between now and the springtime.
As you know, we were lucky enough to have said to get out of banks quite a few years ago -- perhaps too early, but we like healthcare. It has been the core of our portfolios. It has done well for us. We continue to like it. It is amazing to see stocks actually go up this year in that sector. And we like certain technology companies. But we're concentrating our portfolios right now in the United States and to some degree now, in the UK.

Friday, Feb 24, 2006 BLACK: I think the other thing that one has to think about is bird flu. Avian flu is something that has been in the news every day, but it`s clearly spreading. It is, so far, not clearly being transmitted human to human. But there`s some early evidence that one has to keep an eye on that more than ever.
KANGAS: Well, since you are a medical doctor, we certainly will take that and heed it very carefully. Now, when you were with us last June, you recommend two stocks to buy. Let`s see how those stocks fared in the meantime. Chiron, medical products company, up nearly 21 percent, great call. And Biogen, another biotech stock, up 36.2 percent. I congratulate you on two great choices.
