LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE FOR JONAS
John Jonas brings home two major awards in the span of a week

Winning major awards is nothing new for Dr. John J. Jonas, McGill University engineering professor of Metallurgy and Metcalfe street resident. The internationally renowned Jonas has collected numerous awards from Canada and around the world in the last twenty years, including the Order of Canada in 1993.
But winning two in the span of a week is a stretch, even for him.
Last week, Dr. Jonas won the Killam award, considered Canada¹s most distinguished annual award given in recognition of career achievements in natural science, health science and engineering.
Then this week, Dr.Jonas learned that he was one of 29 people that had been named to the order of Quebec, an honour given to people for their contribution to Quebec society.
"Certainly, it is the first time I¹ve won from two separate organizations," said Dr.Jonas as he sat in his office, cluttered with countless awards and books. "Luck plays a big role, but once you start (winning), it picks up," he added.

Jonas, 67, was born in Montreal and graduated from McGill University with a bachelor¹s degree in metallurgical engineering in 1954. He added Ph.D. from Cambridge University in England in 1960, and has been teaching mechanical metallurgy at McGill since then. He also established the CSIRA steel processing laboratory, a facility equipped with a number of specialized testing machines that aids in experiments in the field of high temperature deformation of steel. He has been a resident of Westmount for more than 30 years. see w-n Steel
The Killam Award, inaugurated in 1981, comes with a $75,000 cash prize and a special awards ceremony and dinner at the National Gallery in Ottawa where Governor General Adrienne Clarkson will be attending.
Jonas will use part of the prize money to help his youngest children through the remaining years of their university careers. He will also use the prize money to take a cruise with wife Holly for their upcoming 40th wedding anniversary.
"My wife¹s tickled that now its in the paper, and I can¹t go back on it," Jonas said laughing.
Jonas credits Holly for much of his success. "If you¹re going to be a busy scientist, that¹s important," he said. "She¹s enabled me to concentrate most of my energies on my professional life," he said, adding "behind every succesful man, there is an exhausted woman."
Holly Jonas said that teamwork is what has enabled them to succeed. "I think we¹re a team," said Mrs. Jonas, "When he wins, I know that I¹m in the equation."
"I believe in Harmony inside a family unit," she added. "I came to the decision a long time ago that only one person can have the high profile position in the family." The Jonas¹s have four children Jennifer, Jeremy, Jonathan and Jodie.

The Prix Marie-Victorin is an award by the Government of Quebec that is part of the Prix du Québec, which "goes to researchers in the pure and applied sciences whose work lies in fields outside biomedicine. These fields include the natural and physical sciences, engineering, and technology, and the agricultural sciences". [1] It is named in honour of Marie Victorin.
