The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has announced having arrested its first suspected film pirate after an investigation that began in March 2006. Twenty-five-year-old Gérémie Adam, a Montrealer, is accused of copyright violations connected to two films. He was arrested in a Montreal movie theatre using a camcorder. He'll appear at Montreal court house to answer two charges of having deliberately put into circulation over the Internet counterfeit copies of two films. Mr. Adam risks a fine or prison or both.

The Independent Film Channel is streaming 22 short films called “Trapped in the Closet” by the R&B recording artist R. Kelly. The Jewish Television Network, a nonprofit television production and distribution company, is streaming music videos by Jewish performers, cooking shows and Israeli news programs. The network is also planning to stream religious services during the High Holy Days in September, the sort of broadcast that would be hard to find on mainstream television.
,,,,ReelTime, based in Seattle, digitally distributes thousands of movies and television shows to customers who either rent titles for 99 cents each or subscribe to the service for $4.99 a month to $19.99 for six months.

— Three years after conquering the Cannes Film Festival and winning the Palme d’Or for “Fahrenheit 9/11,” Michael Moore has returned the amour big time with “Sicko,” his most fluid provocation to date. A persuasive, insistently leftist indictment of the American health care system, as well as a funny valentine to all things French — and many things Canadian, British and Cuban — the film shows that while Mr. Moore remains a radical partisan, he has learned how to sell his argument with a softer touch. He’s still the P. T. Barnum of activist cinema, but he no longer runs the entire circus directly from the spotlight.

The problem with sending TV signals using Internet protocol has always been bandwidth, and one really needs a broadband connection to watch outside of the home as well. And it's best to have a pretty fast home network to set it up — the Slingbox requires access to a router, although it can't connect over Wi-Fi.

Once correctly set up, the Slingbox Pro will allow you to control your TV or any other video source in your home-theatre setup from just about any computer with broadband Internet access. And that includes Mac computers, software for which has just been released just this week. Moreover, Sling Media has added mobile TV to the mix, letting users stream TV programming to any Windows Mobile-powered handheld or cellphone with a Web connection. (It could be a killer app, don't bet on it — it will come with a killer cellphone bill.)

My first download stop was a new site called Jaman (jaman.com), still in the test stage, which promotes itself as “a global online community” that’s “pioneering social cinema.” I didn’t recognize most of the titles, though I see hundreds of films a year, and neither did a friend who programs a major American film festival. I did, however, come across Bryan Singer’s first feature, the creepy “Public Access,” which wasn’t dated, but which I saw when it had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 1993. Scrolling through the 55 titles from Asia, I scoped out that some of the women looked as if they were wearing bouffants, while a few of the men looked ready to hit the disco. Jaman doesn’t date its offerings, but a search on a movie information site soon solved two mysteries: “King Cat” was from 1967 and “Hong Kong Nocturne” from 1966. ... I ponied up for a 32-inch flat-screen television several years ago. I picked the first film to download, J. T. Petty’s “Soft for Digging,” because I liked the nicely composed photograph of two men walking in the woods and the short clip (one of the site’s best features is its preview snippets) of a guy who looked a little like Ed Koch stalking about in a blood-red bathrobe. The film had played at some festivals, which, while not a guarantee of quality, did suggest some kind of provenance.

While no Luddite, I turned out to be woefully unprepared to join the download revolution. It took many frustrating hours to get Jaman’s proprietary player up and running and then to download my selected titles. I had better success elsewhere: I downloaded a smeary-looking copy of Marlon Brando’s “One-Eyed Jacks” from GreenCine (greencine.com), a boutique online site with terrific rental titles (it has Criterion titles I’ve never heard of) but rather less tantalizing video-on-demand offerings. I also tried to download a copy of “Team America: World Police” (because once is never enough) from iTunes. That site suggested that I didn’t have enough disk space to download the movie but encouraged me to proceed. I did. As it happens, I did not have enough space, so I couldn’t complete the download. iTunes billed me $9.99 anyway.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 31 — When the Walt Disney Company’s chief executive, Robert A. Iger, takes the stage at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan. 8, he is expected to introduce the new Disney.com Web site that has taken more than a year to redesign.

For years Disney’s Web sites, which include the popular ESPN.com, ABC.com and Disney.com, have been among the Internet’s most visited. In November, the company overall ranked No. 9 among sites visited at home and work, according to Nielsen Netratings, which tracks online traffic.

But critics of the Disney.com, the homepage for a lot of the company’s online offerings, say it looks amateurish and is hard to navigate. Disney recently showed off the revamped Web site at a company meeting at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
Since 1999, Mr. Wadsworth has had direct oversight of several online sites including Disney.com, FamilyFun.com and Movies.com, as well as Disney’s mobile phone ventures. ....“That is the holy grail,” said Mr. Dixon, particularly given Apple’s interest in in-home entertainment. Steven P. Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, is now Disney’s largest investor after Disney’s $7.4 billion acquisition of Pixar Animation Studios, formerly owned by Apple.

And ChaCha, which uses paid researchers that act as virtual reference librarians to provide answers to users’ queries, got $6.1 million.

Wednesday 30 August 2006 Universal Music Group and an Online Site Plan a Joint Venture to Challenge iTunesA new service, supported by advertisements, will let consumers download a huge catalog of songs from the world's largest record company for free.
The company, called SpiralFrog, said its intention was to wean music fans, especially young people, away from illegal downloads and pirate music sites by offering a legitimate source, supported by advertising instead of download fees.
....For consumers, SpiralFrog’s free downloads will come with many more strings attached than Apple’s paid ones. Users of SpiralFrog will have to sit through advertisements and will be prevented by special software from making copies of the songs they download or from sharing them with other people.
They will have to revisit the SpiralFrog Web site regularly to keep access to the music they download. And the songs will be encoded in the Microsoft WMA format, meaning they will probably not work on Apple iPod portable music players.

...In this case, the beneficiary is KTVX, an ABC affiliate in northern Utah owned by Clear Channel Communications. Until recently the station was like other local broadcasters in that it had little use for its news clips aside from posting them on its Web site for a couple of days and then relegating them to the digital vault. Now a new online service, ClipSyndicate, is finding Web sites like AeroSpaceNews.com that are happy to show these reruns and share the advertising revenue that may follow.

ClipSyndicate, a service of the online video search company Critical Mention, indexes videos from Bloomberg, The Associated Press and other news outlets. Web publishers then visit ClipSyndicate.com and search for clips they like. ClipSyndicate allows Web sites to show the clips only as long as they are not broadcast companies themselves (and as long as they do not also show pornography).
