Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premiu These Desktops Have Brains and Brawn
Intel's latest generation of microprocessors is more compact and transistor-rich than ever, providing better performance and energy efficiency. Check out a few of our favorite desktops packed with a new crop of smarter, faster CPUs. 1. The lowest score came from the Memory. I will probably upgrade to something more when it becomes available (currently 2 gig.) Remember 32 bit vista can only use 3 gig total.
June 11, 2008 An agreement signed between Colombia and the OLPC Foundation will provide 65,000 schoolchildren with laptops. It grieves us to see The Economist’s review of one of our favorite development projects, but we take heart in the conclusion that “Mr. Negroponte’s vision for a $100 laptop was not the right computer, only the right price. Like many pioneers, he laid a path for others to follow.”
Friday 06 June 2008 The rise of the low-cost laptop ...one respect the XO Laptop has undoubtedly made an impact: by helping to spawn a new market for low-cost laptops. Hardly any models costing $500 or less were available when the XO burst onto the scene, but now there is a wide selection of such machines, from familiar makers such as HP and Intel, and from relative newcomers such as Asus and Pioneer Computers. By raising the very possibility of a $100 laptop, the XO presented the industry with a challenge. Wayan Vota, founder of OLPCNews.com, an independent website that follows the project, calls the XO a “harbinger of an entirely new class of computers”.

One Laptop Per Child, an ambitious project to bring computing to the developing world’s children, is reaching out to the public through an interesting marketing campaign. ...Mr. Negroponte, the founding director of the M.I.T. Media Laboratory, views the problem as a temporary one in the long-term pursuit of using technology as a new channel of learning and self-expression for children worldwide. “Give 1 Get 1,” in which Americans and Canadians can buy two laptops for $399

The $100 laptop is fast becoming a reality BACK at the dawn of the personal-computer era, in the late 1970s, millions of future programmers around the world got their first taste of writing software by using an ingenious little computer that cost less than $100 (about $240 in today’s money).

To save power, for instance, the XO’s liquid-crystal display (the biggest consumer of juice in a laptop) can be flipped from backlit colour to self-reflecting monochrome. That not only saves electricity, but helps the screen to be seen better in bright sunlight, where many XOs are likely to be used.
The number crunching is done by an AMD Geode processor running at a modest 433 megahertz, compared with the 2-3 gigahertz of conventional laptops. This processor allows the XO to use less energy and therefore generate much less heat. Result: no power-consuming cooling fan.
