In at least one respect, the passing of Marlon Brando at age 80, was mere formality. The talent that compels us to mark his departure, and which once lit up the American screen with atomic intensity, had withdrawn a long time ago.
Marlon Brando, who burst into public consciousness in 1947 with a raw, almost animalistic performance on Broadway as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire, had by 2001 squandered much of his artistic heat and all of his muscular sexuality.
