While most Canadians are sitting back at their breakfast tables, drinking their morning coffee and kissing their children on the cheek as they head off to school, others are living in a far off corner of the planet, sacrificing their security and time with their families—to build a better world.

A glowing - and well-deserved tribute to Robert Galbraith by Beryl Wajsman (see excerpts below), who has just left for Afghanistan, appeared in The Suburban on 3 October. We wish Robert Godspeed and a safe return, look forward to his promised reports and will miss him greatly at Wednesday Nights. We are amused that in his usual spirit of “mixing it up”, he arrives in Afghanistan at the moment when the Liberal critic and the two Ministers have landed there on their separate (and surely not equal) missions.
October 06, 2007
KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — The competing Conservative and Liberal visions about what Canada should be doing to help bring peace to Afghanistan found an unexpected new stage when Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier arrived at the Canadian base here late Saturday — hours before the expected arrival of Liberal defence critic Denis Coderre. more

Montrealer Robert J. Galbraith is one of the leading war photojournalists of this generation. Galbraith’s career in journalism spans 20 years. He has written and/or photographed for numerous publications in North America and Europe including The New York Times. His reputation reached new heights when he published Iraq: Eyewitness to War — A Photojournalist’s Diary.
Galbraith refused to be an embedded reporter with the American forces and he did not want to sit through orchestrated press conferences at the press centre. He wanted total freedom to cover the war. At great personal peril, he managed to cover the war in a way that has rarely been seen.
Unlike many in the media, despite the human toll and tragedy he documented, his is a compelling and authentic voice on the importance of a heightened Canadian military and diplomatic engagement in democratic development and nation-building worldwide.
Iraq was not his first tour in a war zone. That came in Israel during the scud missle attacks. Then Galbraith covered the rest of the first Gulf War. He returned to Iraq to cover the current war and then he went to Afghanistan in 2005. He has been in the process of planning a new mission to Afghanistan for the better part of the year. Robert feels it is vital to record the critical role Canadian troops are playing in the Kandahar operation. There are untold stories of heroism and valour amidst the service and sacrifice that have literally saved the allied mission. Robert means to tell those stories. He left yesterday for his latest rendezvous with destiny.
We at The Suburban [and at Wednesday Night] are honoured that many of the freelance reports and photos that Robert will be filing will be published in our pages.
… In our talks over the past few weeks I asked what motivated him to pursue this latest adventure. Hadn’t he proven his courage? Hadn’t he done enough to raise conscience and consciousness? His answer was poignant and instructive for us all.
“We should always be willing and fearless to challenge the darkness,” he said.
“Whatever that darkness is. Be it subjugation of another people or the ghosts in our own closets. You are never more alive as when you challenge your worst fears. This is why I am a war photojournalist, and will ever continue to be.”

He left yesterday for his latest rendezvous with destiny.
We at The Suburban are honoured that many of the freelance reports and photos that Robert will be filing will be published in our pages.
Robert’s decision to include this newspaper among the recipients of his dispatches attests to the success of the broader scope we have taken and the heightened relevance of our impact.
During a conference on Iraq organized by my Institute for Public Affairs of Montreal, Robert told me this about his work: “During the compilation of my book, many of my friends said that the cover was too shocking, and might turn off prospective buyers. But to me it was perhaps the most powerful image to come out of my journey, and the symbolism it reflected. Photojournalism is not just documentation.
It is also about advancing art. Oscar Wilde said that art should affront, should repulse, otherwise it will never advance. There are many war books out there with neutral or boring covers. I wanted people to have a finger stuck in their eye when they saw my book, and to realize that this is the real thing, this is the real account of the misery of war. “
This is the kind of hard-hitting journalism you can expect from Robert Galbraith’s dispatches from the front.
In our talks over the past few weeks I asked what motivated him to pursue this latest adventure.

This morning, Mohawk Warriors raised Warrior flags above the Mercier Bridge to show solidarity with blockade at Caledonia, Ontario, which was confronted by the OPP earlier today. Barricades are ready to be put up and manned should the police force confront the Caladonia blockade again. (Str pic by Robert J. Galbraith)rjg" width=240 height=181 border=0>

Friday Apr 21, 2006 wn Kahnawake Mohawk Warriors Show Solidarity For Six Nations Blockade
Many residents of the Kahnawake Mohawk Reservation, (just south of Montreal) were busy today preparing to block all access roads in and out of the village, should the RCMP or OPP attempt another storming of the barricade in Caledonia. This morning, Mohawk Warrior flags were raised above the iron girders of the Mercier Bridge, a major thoroughfare for traffic to and from Montreal and the reserve. (This bridge was barricaded for weeks during the 1990 Oka Crisis). The flags were placed to show solidarity with those manning the Caledonia blockade, just south of Hamilton.
Tuesday, February 28, 2006 Good Morning- as you are rushing around saving the environment you may not have seen this morning's Gazette- where there was a wonderful article on a find and a donation by Robert Galbraith- yes your Robert Galbraith- of journals going back to the 1790's on the Quebec Vermont border- which are apparently well preserved- chronicling the lives and purchases of the freed black slaves- absolutely fascinating- He will be donating the journals to the Mississquoi Museum in Stanbridge East which is a wonderful little museum in an old sawmill which has been restored to chronicle Loyalist life in the Townships which I saw for the firsst time this summer Brian R. Wednesday Jan 18, 2006 David, these are pics of Master Corporal Paul Franklin, of Edmonton. He is a medic I met on a number of occassions while I was in Kandahar. This soldier lost his leg yesterday in Kandahar in a suicide bombing of a Canadaian convoy. Mr Franklin is a cheery, solid soldier, who never had a bad word about anyone and was like a ray of sunshine in a dark region of Afghanistan. It is Canadians like Franklin, that make me proud to carry a Canadian passport. I will always consider him a respectful considerate soldier, and a friend, who after he lost his leg right after the blast, tried to help his fellow injured soldiers. I wish the best to Franklin and all the soldiers we have around the world. He is true Canadian hero, an endangered species of a man from a country that is largely ingnorant of the duties that must be conducted for the benefit of our fellow man and the advancement of our civilization, let alone the dregs of war that Franklin loved to cater to. We should all rise to our feet when we speak of the members of the Canadian Armed Forces. Least we forget.

Wednesday Night is pleased to report that his wife, Phyllis, has let us know that Robert Galbraith has arrived in Afghanistan and his first piece has been published in the Toronto Star of September 15 the first of a series <
Phyllis says that he is "OK, but rather tired And he wants you to know that he is thinking of you and to please say hello to everyone tonight (Wednesday #1228)." We look forward to more published stories & photos and, when he gets the time and uplinks, Robert's personal reports on his coverage of the role of the Canadian troops and the lead-up to the elections on Sunday.
Many will remember that Robert has spoken passionately of the danger to Canadian troops as being one of his principal reasons for reporting on Afghanistan.

Saturday Apr 9, 2005 ts Gomery inquiry proving its worth
Canadians were assured by former prime minister Jean Chrétien and others in the Liberal party that the $250 million federal sponsorship program was a high-minded bid to shore up national unity by promoting Canada in Quebec at a time when separatist sentiment ran high. But in helping Canada, some in the Liberal party appear to have helped their partisan cause as well. And handsomely at that.

Wow! I was very uplifted by what Mr. Ignatieff had to say about the reality of time we live in. Are we all but white chickens in a barn, being led to the chopping block, wake up! If you are mugged by a gun-totting robber, what would be your reaction? Do you hold out your hand in peace. Now what if he/or she, starts to pistol whip you for. Do you hold out your hand in peace? Now what if it is a nation that is pistol-whipping you. If your children are being attacked, do you call a lawyer to negotiate? Please consider what I am trying to say. In my book (www.eyewitnesstowar.com) I state; "We all live close to the edge of the precipice that we call civilization and in this book we realize how easy it is to fall or be pushed off the edge, no matter who we are or where we live." There are always two sides to every argument, the key is to try find the middle ground. I have seen men die, children being raped and the misery of war that even you cannot imagine. There is no darkness that I have not seen. But I challenge this darkness, I walk into it, I try to understand it. And let's not forget the terrorism that almost led to the break-up of our country. Were the tactics of the FLQ the spark that ignited Quebec's drive for independence. Were they justified? They are heroes in this province to many. I am not a hawk, nor a dove, just a father who has seen perhaps too much.
Thank-you!
