Mapping the Markets (Deborah Owen and Robin Griffiths)

Robin Griffiths has worked in the financial markets since 1964 in London, Japan and New York, and is now Head of Asset Allocation at Rathbones, a leading UK investment firm. He is a regular commentator on Bloomberg news and has been Chairman of the British Society of Technical Analysts.

Robin Griffiths joined Phillips & Drew in 1966, having taken a degree in Economics at Nottingham University. He went on to be a partner at WI Carr, the first British stock broker to have offices in Hong Kong and Tokyo. Part of this firm was acquired by Grieveson Grant, with whom Robin enjoyed a stay in Japan. In 1986 Robin joined James Capel, which was already owned by HSBC. He stayed
there until normal retirement age, and during that period travelled all over the world to meet their extended client base. For the last six years of that employment Robin was resident in New York.

Having left HSBC Investment Bank in 2002, Robin then joined Rathbones as Head of Global Investment Strategy, where he stayed until 2008. He is currently the Technical Strategist for Cazenove Capital and manages the Worldwide Absolute Return hedge fund.

Robin has been a regular on CNN, CNBC, Reuters and Bloomberg TV. He is a committee member and former chairman of the international Federation of Technical Analysts, and former chairman, now fellow, of the British Society of Technical Analysts. A keen sailor, Robin has crossed the Atlantic five times, setting a new British record in 1984 with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. http://books.global-investor.com/pages/gurus.htm?g&PerIndex=9511

Water

Robin Griffiths and William Houston - the co-authors of Future Storm who in 2006 predicted the present political, economic, commodity and climatic turmoil - have turned their attention to one of the biggest challenges being faced across the globe today: Water.

Water: The final resource: How the politics of water will affect the world (2008)

Due for publication: 20th October 2008 The Money Tree A method for making money in markets (2007)
The book is the result of many years of working with Technical Analysis of world stock markets. The authors have evolved a systematic approach that can be used on any market or group of stocks, that is, what a computer man would call a rules-based expert system. This system indicates when to be invested and when to be in cash. It also indicates which stocks in the universe of stocks to be owned and which to avoid. It does not try to predict the future, but is more analogous to a set of traffic lights. When they are green you Go, and when they are red, you Stop.

These signals do not claim to be foolproof but they do have a very high probability of working. The system has a measurable edge, and it knows what that edge is. Finally there are some money management ideas that help convert a good set of buy and sell signals into a great portfolio performance. All together this is like having a tree in your own backyard that can slowly and steadily grow a crop of fruit each year in the form of money.

Robin Griffiths joined Phillips & Drew in 1966, having taken a degree in Economics at Nottingham University. He went on to be a partner at WI Carr, the first British stock broker to have offices in Hong Kong and Tokyo. A keen sailor, Robin has crossed the Atlantic five times, setting a new British record in 1984 with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.

Rashpal Sohan graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science with a first class degree in Actuarial Science. He joined Rathbone in 2005 as an asset allocation analyst working with Robin Griffiths, the Head of Asset Allocation. He specialises in the use of quantitative techniques in the analysis of global markets, with particular emphasis on building models for system trading and investment purposes.

Take stock of the markets
Do stock markets lead or follow the business cycle trend? “They lead it,” assert Deborah Owen and Robin Griffiths, authors of Mapping the Markets

At 8.45 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on 11 September 2001, flight AA011 from Boston crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center, followed by further planes hitting the north tower and, later on, the Pentagon. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in these atrocities, more than in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. On a smaller scale commuter trains to Madrid were bombed and more recently London. Only in the last outrage were national citizens the terrorists.

Robin Griffiths, who runs a £40 million hedge fund called the Worldwide Absolute Return Fund for Cazenove Capital Management, explains: "The tolerance for losing money in the hedge fund world is very small.
The clients say, 'Look, I didn't ask you to beat an index, I didn't ask you to shoot the lights out. All I asked was to make me money.' That's the main difference between hedge funds and the rest of the banking industry."

Private Individual
For over 30 years Robin Griffiths has published commentary on all world stock markets, bonds, currencies and commodities, and presented his ideas regularly to a global client base. Robin joined Rathbones in 2004, after many years at HSBC Investment Bank (formerly James Capel). He retired from Rathbones in November 2007. He is a committee member and former chairman of the International Federation of Technical Analysts, and former chairman, now fellow, of the British Society of Technical Analysts.
