MICROCELL AWASH IN RED INK
A wireless telephone company in Canada has
acknowledged it's in serious financial
difficulty. Microcell Telecommunications Inc.
says it may be forced to default on some of its
long-term debt of $1.3 billion. The company's
CEO, André Tremblay, says if Microcell cannot
meet some of its debt responsibilities, its
lenders may refuse to continue to support it.
Earlier on Friday, Microcell reported a loss of
almost $200 million, or 83 cents a share, for the
quarter ending on June 30. In the previous second
quarter, the wireless firm lost $75 million, or
72 cents a share. The combined bad news caused
Microcell shares to fall by almost 29 per cent on
the Toronto Stock Exchange. The stock closed at
only 10 cents, down four cents. It was worth more
than $70 in early 2000. Microcell is the only
major Canadian telecommunications firm that
relies solely on wireless service. Wireless
competitors such as Bell Mobility, Rogers AT&T
and Telus Mobility are financially supported by
major telephone carriers with significant
revenues.
