Tuesday Dec 25, 2001 That was quite an article in the National Post about the Wednesday Night Soires! What an incredible institution you have created. Now if only I can find myself in Montreal on a evening!!

Michael Meighen

Friday Dec 7, 2001 Saw the article. It certainly captures the "flavour" of the evenings and confirms that longevity is sometimes a sign of success, not only of merely ageing.
Keep it up. Best wishes to ALL.

Salon selective
On any given Wednesday,
when the City of Westmount is shutting down, when the night lights of the town's Gothic City Hall are turned on and the Mayor has left, when the elders from the lawn bowling club and the children from Westmount Park have long since gone home to dinner, a red bulb will be turned on outside an Edwardian mansion on stately Rosemount Avenue, and the door will be left open a crack. Hi guys

Just a quick note to let you know that i ran into Dan Coulson at the club. He admitted to reading the Post, even tho they sold it, and saw the article. He wanted to congratulate you/us on it - he thought it was very favourable.
so there ya go.

Fri 11/30/01 5:30 PM Dear D & D,

Lesley Rogan forwarded us the fun piece in the November 3, 2001 National Post. She asked if we missed "The Old Days." Indeed we do!
Congratulations to you both. This thing just seems to go from strength to strength.
We're off to Baja next week, so we send early Season's greetings now.

Much Love, Di & Gordon Green [ravengreen2@shaw.ca]

Hi David and Diana, 14/Nov/2001

I hope you are all well. I miss you. By the way, that was a nice and very large article that appeared in the National Post. Congratulations!! Aside from decidedly negative descriptions, the journalist seemed to present a lot of what is Wednesday Night.
Truly yours, Michael Judson [mike@judsonwoods.com]

This was quite a spread on the weekend. Congratulations. Great story and pictures. They (not you) looked as if the salon took place in an Ivory Merchant setting!

Dear Diane & David;

The article on your 'Wednesday-Night' soirees in the past Saturday's National Post was most interesting. Having lived in Montreal, and visited often on business & pleasure, brought back fond memories of the different life-styles that reside in that lovely city.
We too regret the amalgamation forthcoming that will eliminate the distinct municipalities..c'est la guerre!!
May you continue to entertain and enjoy the 'Wednesday-Night' soirees forever!
Regards from Canada's best kept secret...Winnipeg.. Edward & Alanna Nicholson. [edwardnicholson99@msn.com]

Just read about your salons this weekend. They missed a HUGE resource, though, by not mentioning the web page. I'm impressed with the Afghanistan page.
I prepare news content for the tbsource.com web page. While we focus on local news, here's a link to a page I maintain for our newsroom's web page with some links of interest
www.tbsource.com/Newsh/index.asp?provider=tbt&id=25077
Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Keep up the GREAT work on your own site.

Grand Slam!

What a weekend chez les Nicholson. An impressive three page coverage of a public passion (Wednesday night Salon) in the best-read national newspaper in Canada followed by a resounding victory for the Forces of Good in a surprising municipal election renversement. What more can you ask for? It was great to see your accomplishments recognized and lauded. I was delighted Mark contributed some of his early memories. It is amazing how our lives can be changed by semi spontaneous events. In your both your cases your warm hospitality, curiosity and genuine interest in people and ideas have given birth to an institutionalized happening. Pierrette Lucas [pierrettelucas@hotmail.com]

Dear D & D,

I can only say, how amazing. I just read the article in the Star about your Wednesday night salons which compelled me to visit your website. It is an informative, eclectively provocative montage. I envy your evenings of discourse and discord. In the rural backwater of Ontario, opportunities for stimulating conversation are limited to weather predictions. Congratulations on providing intellectual ballast for your community.

Sat 5/26/01 8:06 AM ....Dave and I often talk about you and the wonderful group you have gathered on Wed nights. It is so rare to find people who are able to stimulate so much good thinking and to give a chance for the full range of opinions to be aired.

When my "Tales of the Monkey King" is published by pacific view press, I'll be sure to send you a copy to read to your grandchildren-as you'll certainly have them by then.

Wed 4/25/01 D&D:
I salute your progress toward infinity in the number of Wednesday nights you have done over the years!
I realize that Wednesday nights are a direct descendant of the smoke-filled policy debates in hallowed halls of yore which drove the engines of the expanding British Empire a couple centuries ago. But it is time for Wednesdays to enter the 21st century-- AKA "The Jetson Years" -- with some upgraded technological savvy.
So, everyone retire to the computer room and look over David's shoulder as he upgrades his computer with the attached new software and peripherals.

To All the Gang at the 1000th Wednesday Night Salon!!!

Regretfully I cannot be with you all tonight. I couldn’t however let this opportunity go by without offering my sincere thanks and appreciation to David and Diana for their hospitality and very imaginative way of bringing together such a diverse group of interesting individuals.

My evenings with many of you always proved to be exhilarating and informative. I consider myself very fortunate to have been given the chance to meet you all and discuss such a wide scope of topics. Being new to Montreal when I joined the group, it was a great forum for me to get into the “beat” of what this great city is all about.

Once again, hats off to David & Diana for their dedication and community spirit in keeping this going – please raise your glasses on my behalf to them with the hope of many more “salons” to come.

Sincerely, Robin Wohnsigl [rwohnsigl@aircanada.ca]

Wed 5/23/01 7:53 AM Good Morning David,

Sorry I missed the landmark Wednesday night meeting. We have been working with our technical crew here in St-Sauveur preparing for the 18th Gala Des Étoiles on Sept. 6 at Place Des Arts. We are also working on our touring schedule for early 2002 (Hong Kong, Macau, Shanghai, Beijing, Taiwan).

I still enjoy your wonderful website; keep up the great work. See our updated website at: www.GalaDesEtoiles.com .

Nathalie joins me in sending our warmest regards to you and Diana.

Robin & Stefi are in France on one week's vacation for a little R&R and some great golf.

They return to Canada on May 22nd

By the way, Diana & David, I read Yves Boisvert's column in yesterday's LaPresse and have saved it for Robin (a great opportunity for him to practice his French).

Bye for now, Maureen Robin Wohnsigl

Read about you in La Presse, this morning, in a column by Yves Boisvert. He did a nice primer on Wednesday Night history and a few flattering biographical notes on the both of you. Pierre D'Amour

Tue 5/1/01 1:14 PM Dear David and Diana,
Just a quick note to wish you all the best for tomorrow evening and to send my regrets that I'm still stuck up here in Kyrgyzstan and therefore unable to attend. I can assure you, however, that I will be with you in my thoughts and drink a toast to the event as I head back on the weekly Thursday a.m. BA flight, which should be departing from Bishkek at just about the same time you will be starting the festivities. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the little rhyme which follows.

Best of everything to both of you,

Every week on Wednesday night,
We come from the left and from the right,
From far and near and in between,
From high and low, to see and be seen,
To discourse with eloquence,
And expound with elegance.
We preach and argue and even squabble,
Yet never does the conversation wobble.
With David at the helm the course is true,
Even though the subject may be blue.
And when the pilot must be guided,
Diana makes sure he's not one-sided.
After one thousand nights the magic has just begun,
Like Sheherezade's Prince, we need a thousand and one.

Mon 5/14/01 2:18 PM David and Diana --- that was a wonderful picture of you two in the Westmount Examiner, as was the article. Something Diana said about fields that influence the economy caught my attention, as I have just finished reading Jane Jacobs' "The Nature of Economies" - fun *and* full of insights. Best regards, Peter Peter Dunn

Dear David and Diana,
It must have been a great bash. We were really looking forward to being there to help you celebrate, for 1000 sessions must be some sort of world record. Not even Ed Sullivan could top that. But the gods were unkind. I fell into a pothole, coming out of Reno's on Taschereau of all places, and gave my ankle a bad sprain. I was hobbling around on crutches when necessary, but most of the time just stretching out on the couch, nursing the ankle and catching up on my reading as best I could. It's a slow process; I'm still wearing a brace.
Take care, Frank Kinnelly

Dear David:
Thank you so much for the wonderful and very interesting evening and it was great to hear that there still are some smart, successful and opinionated (in the good sense of the word) people around. Bombardier is indeed in good hands.
Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS on your 1000th! I can't help but think that one day, some luck historian will come across the tapes and the musty old notes from these meetings and a great whoop of delight will be heard. What a rich mine of information. By the way, you did a very good job controlling the conversation, just the right amount of cajoling and imperial dictums, but then again, after 999 tries, I suppose that practice does make perfect.
Please give my love to Di.

Dear Mr. Nicholson,

I was all excited about this incredible event [#999] and it was an honor for me to be invited. Iwas getting to ready to attend, but was announced today that my wife will be induced on that same Wednesday. I am sure you understand the importance for us of that obligation. So unless she delivers before that date, which is very unlikely, I will unfortunately not be able to attend, to my great regret.

(P.S.: Would you ever consider a very late arrival? The delivery might go well, and I would most likely not sleep at the hospital...)

Dear Diana and David,

Thanks so much for the invitation. The event sounds more than interesting and I am honoured to be invited. Right now I am in Kyrgyzstan, which is about as far from Rosemount Avenue as one can get so, unfortunately, I will not be able to be there.

Having just finished a day of hiking in the (foothills of the) Tien Shan range (the second highest mountain range in the world) and enjoyed a meal of roast yak, I can't complain. However, I do miss Wednesday night and hope that I can get back for the Millenium Event, although this is far from certain.

Look forward to seeing you soon, Sam

It is good to hear from you and to know that Wednesday night is still going strong. Congratulations on the 'Milleniunth' edition! It is five weeks since I arrived in Brussels and I have busy trying to settle in, which is why I'm now playing catch-up with my mail. We are both well, Susan has now been seconded to Exxon-Mobil Europe as a project co-ordinator and as always is hard at work. I have just started meeting with prospective employers, but have not made any decisions as yet. Thank you for your consideration in giving me Hubert Lissen's contact, I have not called him but will do so probably early next week. Please pass my regards to David and the 'Wednesday-Nighters'.

Warm regards, David.
