#1013 - August 1st, 2001
with Andy Nulman
When Andy Nulman steps up to the microphone, audiences know they're in for something somewhat out-of-the-ordinary- and for good reason. To every speech he delivers, Nulman brings a wealth of expertise and anecdotes from numerous and varied fields.
As former CEO of the world-renowned Just For Laughs Comedy Festival, Nulman built it into the largest and most important event of its kind on earth, while producing and writing over 150 Festival TV shows throughout his 15- year tenure. Now, as President of www.airborne-e.com, a highly innovative wireless content provider, he is at the vanguard of a wildly stimulating and increasingly important new economy industry.
'Stickiness' has become the most important factor in determining a website's effectiveness. How long do visitors stay at your site and visit from page to page? How do you get them to stay?
Nulman's company and internet presentations focus on two words: Click. Stick. His goal is to help you and your customer's bond and develop a beneficial relationship.
Never straying from his entertainment roots, Nulman's technology presentations always involve liberal doses of humour.
Somerville Andy is a friend of mine so I'll try to be there

Because of all this, Nulman has evolved into a prominent media personality, whose column "The Short List" has become a must-read every Sunday in Southam's Montreal Gazette. He is also an author, whose most recent book is entitled "How to Do The Impossible!"
From his perch on the Primadonna terrace, Andy Nulman, former top dog at the Just for Laughs festival, believes he has found the solution to keep this town revving year-round: "If we could simply figure out a way to make our women look just as beautiful in polar fleece and down jackets as they do in tank-tops and string-back tops, if we could figure out a way to make snow sexy, Montreal would be jammed all the time. The city offers the most unbelievable sightseeing in the world."
And Nulman ain't referring to the St. Joseph's Oratory or the Botanical Gardens. His darting eyes, along with those of almost everyone else on street level, tell no lies. The human traffic here is astonishing, almost surreal.
"It's amazing," says the sighing Nulman. "Snowmobiles are every bit as fast and dangerous as F-1 cars, but they never seem to attract babes like this." worldmicrocap.com links you to the inside sources you need.

Sun 7/29/01 5:54 AM Shakeout in Fiber Optics
A slow-developing, less-than-competitive market for consumer communications is partly to blame for the overcapacity that is crippling the telecom industry. www.nytimes.com/2001/07/29/opinion/29SUN2.html?todaysheadlines
We will hear/see his new book I Almost Killed George Burns! (ECW Press, $18.95cdn)
|
As predicted, when Andy Nulman is the guest, Wednesday Night
discussions can go in any number of directions from his
experiences as CEO of “Just for Laughs”, so ably recounted
in his latest book, to his new venture as CEO of a content
provider. Airborne delivers entertainment to hand-held computers (Palm Pilots), but it can also deliver much, much more, from stock
market quotes to educational material. While the technology is
still in a relatively early stage, this is an exciting new
application giving people access to information at times when
they are remote from their PCs – think of the possibilities for
kids on the school bus, cramming for the morning’s exam…. On a
more serious note, this development allows individuals to continue
to pursue subjects at their own pace, just like reading a book on
the Metro, although some sceptics might point out that the book’s
batteries don’t need to be re-charged.
Peter Ratzer, brother of Gerald, was welcomed back to Wednesday
Night. Peter, last here for #848, played a crucial role in the
financing of the Chunnel and is now attempting to record that
experience for publication without incurring the wrath and lawsuits
of any and all who may have been mentioned in his journal.
ADAPTATION AND TECHNOLOGY
The harnessing of fire, the use of tools, the wheel, the printing
press, the steam engine, ... all the pivotal fruits of human
ingenuity, have benefited human beings, prolonged life expectancy
and generally improved the quality of human life. The considerable
time lapse between inventions enabled society to react, adapt,
legislate.
Stem Cell Research
For the first time in the history of Man, technological advances
have been introduced with such rapidity and frequency that adaptation
and legislation have been unable to keep pace. The possible impact
on society is breathtaking and at times frightening. Is the
patenting of human genetic material a boon to mankind or the product
of outdated legislation being invoked for human benefit, or perhaps
both? Stem cell research using stem cells from human embryos
brings into question the sanctity of human life, respect for the
transmission of human life. Many who accept the concept of
therapeutic abortions reject the concept of the use of stem cells
coming from human embryos, many of which are by-products of in vitro
fertilization procedures. see W-N STEMCELL-Notes
Social Impacts of Electronic Technology
Although advanced genetic technology probably evokes an emotionally-
charged reaction on both sides of the issue, rapid advances in
electronic technology, including digital, microwave and cable, is
at the centre of what is probably less passionate debate. Do large
classrooms have a deleterious effect on students by insulating the
student from teacher, or does the student benefit from receiving
information from the source which is the most articulate and/or
informed on a particular subject, perhaps emanating from a remote
source? Do Internet chat rooms promote human interaction or
isolation.
Exciting cellular telephone technology permits access to games,
instruction, data, science, humour as well as voice. Does the
individual interacting with his cell-phone or computer gain personal
and interpersonal skills from the experience, or does he or she
become more insulated from reality? Has to-day’s school child
become an electronic whiz at the expense of the skill required to
form meaningful human relationships? The debate continues, but not
as rapidly as advances in the technology which remains its source.

Small is beautiful – especially when it’s government!
|
|
Paradoxically, the global village concept invites larger participation
at the possible expense of closeness. The megalopolis concept, while
less popular at present in the world outside Québec, has provoked
some debate here. Residents of smaller closely-knit communities
fear with some reason, the loss of identity, the loss of a sense
of belonging in a merged megaworld. Curiously, while recognizing
this at the provincial level, the proponents fail to recognize the
validity of the same dynamics operating at the municipal level that
they promote at the provincial level.
Real estate and the economy
On the financial scene, an increasing number
of investors, reacting to a steep decline and rapid levelling-off in
the stock market have moved their money to hard assets. Montreal,
where depressed real estate values have been the result of a less
than booming economy, has become the target of many such investors,
creating some hardship on home owners who see their taxes about to
rise dramatically. The interest in Montreal as a new home for such
investment, is interpreted by some as recognition of this city as a
dynamic growth area, but by others as one of the few cities left
where slower growth has left available, bargains in real estate.
QUOTES OF THE EVENING:
- “There is no good evidence that human embryos are the best source of stem cells.”
- “Political correctness is shutting down universities.”
- “Is telecommunication replacing human interaction? ... This is a substitute for physical reality.”
- “If you have never experienced what local government can do for you, then you can’t understand what local government can do for you.”
- “The only place in the world where amalgamations are still taking place today is in Québec. It ‘s mass hysteria.”
- “(Latest microwave devices are) ... opening up the technology to communicate, not the ability to communicate.”
