Welcome to Wednesday-Night Wed1272 July 19th. 2006
PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WILL BE WITH US
....... it helps us to arrange the deck chairs on the Titanic!
Julius Grey OWN, described as formidable, and on at least one occasion, as "the pit bull of Canada's constitutional lawyers" is a welcome star this Wednesday.
Among his many crusades (let us not call them jihads), Julius has defended smokers, pot purveyors, patients' rights including elderly owners of pets excluded from provincially subsidized retirement homes, a dominatrix, the City of Westmount in the forced merger debate, Montreal English-language hospitals challenging the Quebec government's plans to close them down, Adil Charkaoui, detained on a Security Certificate for three years, and so many more.
One of his recent and more famous cases was the "Kirpan case" in which he defended the 12 year-old Gurbaj Singh Multani who was discovered to be wearing his kirpan, the ceremonial dagger of the Sikhs, to school. The case went to the Supreme Court and in March of this year, the Court ruled 8-0 that a total ban of the kirpan in schools violates the Charter of Rights because it infringes on the Charter’s guarantees of religious freedom.
In gratitude, the Singh family arranged a trip to India for Julius and Lynne, his wife. We understand that it was an incredible experience and are looking forward to hearing the tale, replete with Julius' characteristically wonderful observations on every aspect of what they saw and experienced: culture, music, human rights, living conditions, architecture, democracy, the economy.
However, being sure that Julius will not be able to limit his comments to India, we anticipate broad discussion that will embrace numerous topics:
the growing crisis in the Middle East Lebanon toll passes 200
(is Israel, using Lebanon as a starting point, proceeding with the tacit approval of the U.S. to knock out the military capacities of Syria and Iran?);
the somewhat dismal results of the G-8 Summit ;
the Mumbai bombings;
the Mexican electoral crisis (shades of Florida!);
the market "Hot market likely on its last legs ... Most of the world's major indexes -- including the S&P/TSX composite index and the Dow Jones industrial average -- peaked in April or May and have since been waffling between slight gains for the year and slight losses. ;
the on-going dispute over the rights of the prisoners in Guantanamo

Expansion of presidential powers in the U.S.

and finally, a note of optimism:
Getting medications to those who need them
High costs and red tape have kept cures from millions of people with neglected diseases in Asia, Africa and Latin America, as scientists often have had to abandon their turned-down research after exhausting traditional testing and approval options. A growing number of frustrated but innovative humanitarians, however, have found ways to overcome the obstacles and get medical treatment to those who need it the most.

So please join us for what promises to be a mind-bending experience, always enjoyable in the company of Julius.
We add the same note of caution as last week: beware - the tired and somewhat tattered Rosemount Avenue you have come to know and love is currently in pieces and it will take courage and intrepid navigation to reach the door-that-is-always-open to you.
Intrepid navigators and intrepid minds, WELCOME on Wednesday Night!

Wednesday Jul 5, 2006 What 'Energy Security' Really Means
At their annual gathering each summer, the leaders of the rich world promise to fix some pressing global problem -- and usually fail to deliver. This month's Group of Eight summit in Russia takes statecraft to a whole new level. Global leaders have "energy security" on the agenda. But judging by what they say and do, they don't always understand the subject.
For many American leaders, energy security means producing energy at home and relying less on foreigners. But the United States imports three-fifths of its oil, and the share is heading up. For the foreseeable future, alternative fuel is unlikely to change that.

MOSCOW (AP) - The Group of Eight foreign ministers held extensive discussions on Iran, the latest Mideast crisis and a range of other international issues in a day of meetings in Moscow but did not debate a theme that has dominated public discussion of this year's Russian presidency of the elite group: the state of democracy in Russia.
MOSCOW, July 3 (RIA Novosti) - Representatives of non-governmental organizations will gather in Moscow for a two-day forum Monday in the run-up to the Group of Eight summit of leaders from the industrialized world later this month.
