Welcome to Wednesday Night #1314 May 9, 2007

PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU CAN BE WITH US - IT MAKES THE CHAIRMAN'S JOB EASIER

Do see the account of the Wednesday Night #1313 . It is a good read!

Douglas Lightfoot will be with us next Wednesday to discuss his newly-released video "Nobody's Fuel" which carries the intriguing and controversial subtitle 'Energy supply is more important than climate change'. He explains: "Climate change and global warming are very important issues... it is clear that most people have no idea how much energy our society consumes, nor how important it is to Humankind and the adaptation to climate change. ...The signs on the wall all point to a time, perhaps within a generation, when affordable, high quality energy may begin to become scarce."

There is little doubt in the minds of most Wednesday Nighters (thanks to persuasive arguments of our OWN Judith Patterson and others) that Hubbert's Peak is a reality. Douglas presents cogent arguments for adoption of nuclear fission as a primary source of energy to meet the world's future needs. We are also delighted that Frank Kinnelly, former Science Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa will also be with us to provide knowledgeable comments and questions. He mentions that "Many of the sessions at the annual AAAS meeting in San Francisco focused on energy policy, while others focused on climate change, and for the first time since I've been attending these sessions there was a serious look at nuclear energy." Frank and Douglas are already engaged in a vigorous e-mail exchange which we have enjoyed.

There will, of course, be other topics, both related and not.

In the related category is the release of the report of the third working group of the IPCC (if you have to ask, you haven't been paying attention!) with its optimistic conclusion that "There is considerable economic potential for the mitigation of global greenhouse gas emissions over the coming decades, that could offset the projected growth of global emissions or reduce emissions below current levels."

On the heels of the report's release, comes the news that Canada's New Government (when WILL they stop?) welcomes release of the IPCC Report ... Interesting, how quickly optics change

By Wednesday the surfeit of analyses of the outcome of the Iraq security conference in Egypt, will await the combined wisdom of Wednesday Night

The French presidential election will have been decided - although Wednesday Night seems pretty convinced that the outcome will be a "Sarko" victory

The Wolfowitz saga, on the other hand, will likely not have been resolved as his lawyer is quoted as saying that he will refuse to step down even if the special committee concludes that he was acting unethically

The vote in Scotland for a Pro-independence nationalist majority is worth a mention

The date for the elections, which may or may not resolve the power struggle in Ukraine, will have been announced

Queen Elizabeth II will have been and gone on her six-day tour of the U.S. where doubtless the most enjoyable part will have been her first-ever Kentucky Derby

The media itself is in the news, first with the Murdoch proposal to take over the Dow Jones empire and more recently the possibility that Thomson Corporation is bidding on Reuters.

And, finally, for lovers of international intrigue and the mysteries of the justice system, Carlos the Jackal is due for another trial even though he is already serving a life sentence.

This site may be for kids, but it's the most understandable explanation for non-scientists that I have found

Matter can be changed into energy. The world's most famous scientist, Albert Einstein, created the mathematical formula that explains this. It is:

E = m 2

This equation says:

E [energy] equals m [mass] times c 2 [c stands for the velocity or the speed of light. c2 means c times c, or the speed of light raised to the second power -- or c-squared.]

You can listen to Einstein's voice explaining this at: www.aip.org/history/einstein/voice1.htm

Or in HD?

Tory green plan favours oilpatch, critics charge
The Conservative government fended off opposition accusations Tuesday of favouritism for the Alberta oilpatch as various industry groups started raising questions about new federal environmental regulations that make the oilsands the only Canadian sector allowed to increase pollution linked to smog over the next decade.

    Environment

We don't think it's any secret that we rely heavily on the BBC, frequently for the excellent coverage of Science & nature and Technology. (Superb coverage of climate change issues including Sir Nicolas Sterns' review) However, we also commend whoever is responsible for the collection of links that accompany any major news story. Tonight, it is Mexican presidential politics a topic we have touched on all too infrequently.

Monday 04 December 2006 Pengrowth Energy Trust Announces Extension of Its Offer to Purchase Outstanding Convertible Debentures

Monday 14 May 2007 How Will This Bull Market End?
Larry MacDonald submits: How will the bull market in stocks end? One scenario is an escalation in long-term interest rates relative to the market earnings yield (inverse of price-earning ratio) to a point where the incentive for takeovers and buybacks is eliminated.

Maybe the end will come as soon as the second half of this year, as veteran technical analyst Ron Meisels suggests in his latest Phases and Cycles newsletter. His bullish market calls have been on the mark throughout this extended phase, but now he is saying: “…by the end of the second quarter the bull’s fuel tanks will likely run close to empty. Therefore, the second half of the year may … bring an end to the 2002-07 bull/bear cycle.”

    Mexican Resilience Increasing - May 9, 2007
Mexico has come a long way since the so-called Tequila crisis of 1994. Nowadays, Mexico gets caught up in global volatility just like everyone else, but is on the resilient end of the spectrum..
Consider how Mexico weathered the last couple of emerging market storms. In May of 2006, emerging markets retreated on evidence of slower global economic growth, declining commodity prices and rising international risk. The average emerging market bond spread widened by over 50 basis points, but Mexico’s rose by only 37. Mexico’s stock market fell by 18%, whereas Brazil fell by 26%. And, the Mexican peso fell by only 4% while Brazil fell by 16%. Past issues | his WN page
