The Players

The $13.2-million acquisition, which will be announced today, will add up to 400 new stores to Peachtree's network.

Launched in 1995, Peachtree sets up Web sites and marketing plans for regional and independent grocers. The firm's site (www.PeachtreeNetwork.com) also sells cookware and related items and lets customers surf for recipes and nutritional advice.

Peachtree, which raised $2.4 million in its initial public offering in March, recently joined forces with the five-store Mourelatos chain in Quebec. It also works with grocery stores in 11 other Canadian cities and six U.S. urban centres.

MyButler.com, a San Francisco-based private company started by Montrealer Louis Brouillet, specializes in technology that helps grocers sort out the logistics of filling online orders.

Peachtree CEO Gregory Kalinin said the mix of myButler.com's technical expertise and Peachtree's know-how in Web-site content and marketing made the two companies a good fit.

Given the size of the U.S. market, the move was also crucial to Peachtree's growth, according to Kalinin.

"Regional grocers in Canada have between one and 20 stores in their chains," Kalinin said. "In the U.S., they have between 50 to 300. And regional grocers make up about 45 per cent of the entire shopping market in the U.S."

Overnight News (as of 8:30 a.m.)
U.S. Non-Farm Payrolls fell a surprising 108,000 in July. Expectations had been for an increase of 74,000 jobs. This should be positive for the bond and equity markets as it provides further evidence of moderating economic activity. Average hourly earnings rose 0.4% - in line with expectations - but June's data was revised down from +0.4% to +0.3%. The U.S. unemployment rate was unchanged from June at 4.0%. In Canada, the unemployment rate rose to 6.8% from 6.6% in June due to a decline in part-time positions and weakness in manufacturing employment. In corporate news, Bombardier has agreed to purchase DaimlerChrysler's Adtranz trainmaking unit for approximately C$1.5 billion. The deal makes Bombardier the largest manufacturer of trains in the world with pro forma revenues of $8.5 billion. Brascan reported a 44% jump in second quarter earnings to $0.53 per share. The company also raised its quarterly dividend by half a cent to $0.25. In the mining sector, Rio Tinto Plc won its battle with Anglo American Plc for control of iron ore producer North Limited.

Wednesday 23 August 2000 the wireless Internet is a baffling concept. The obvious question: why on earth surf the Web on your cellular phone or palm-sized computer?

Some of the growing number of information-based wireless services - some very practical, others designed to kill time or give you a chuckle - might help quell that knee-jerk skepticism and start erasing the impression that the wire-free Web will soon mirror the high-speed, interactive, graphic-based wired Web we've grown accustomed to.
