18 November 2000 ..to succeed director Bernard Uzan in the administrative half of his job. "Clearly, therefore, no choice has been made."

The process has been overseen by a headhunter while the board chastely keeps its distance. Laurin and two other members will meet the favourites early in December, and make an announcement in January.

Of course, opera lovers adhere to no agenda and care nothing for discretion. Rumours have been flying like knives in a revenge tragedy.

Nicolas Desjardins, head of the Conservatoire de Musique du Quebec and former director of Jeunesses Musicales du Canada, leads the lobby-chat list. Laurin confirms that "his name has been suggested by more than one person."

20/Jan/2001 New voice at the Opera By: ARTHUR KAPTAINIS The Opera de Montreal yesterday announced the appointment of Kim Gaynor, a Canadian and career arts administrator who has spent the last eight years in London, as the new managing director of the company. She starts work on March 19.
Born in Burlington, Ont., the soft-spoken 39-year-old bears little resemblance to Bernard Uzan, who left the administrative half of his job in September. Nevertheless, Gaynor articulated an essentially Uzanian policy of sound fiscal management, with extra stress on audience recruitment.

15/Dec/2000 Embraer deal decried
By: SHEILA McGOVERN The Gazette
Within days of getting its wrists slapped by the World Trade Organization, Brazil was back selling airplanes at a price Canada insists is unfair to other manufacturers, most notably Bombardier Inc.
Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA, better known as Embraer, announced yesterday it has signed a $900- million (U.S.) contract with SA Airlink of South Africa for 30 firm orders of 37-seat regional jets and 40 options on additional jets, possibly 70-seaters, over the next 10 years.

Bombardier Inc. announced a major shuffle of its top ranks yesterday, including the elevation of company chairman Laurent Beaudoin's son Pierre to the key post of president of Bombardier Aerospace's business-aircraft division. T-BBD_B.htm chart

Wednesday Night Salon #981

December 20, 2000

INTRODUCTIONS

Gregory & Irina Egli

There are two inalterable Wednesday Night traditions at the Nicholsons, one being that the salons occur each Wednesday regardless of other considerations, the other that on Wednesdays preceding or falling on Christmas day are abbreviated so that the assembled guests have the opportunity of celebrating and socializing before the hour gets toolate for us of the older generation.

The skills and spontaneity of Wednesday nighters are limitless. The exquisite voice of Susan Eyton-Jones was magnificent as always, accompanied unexpectedly by Holly Jonas who graciously filled in when Susan’s accompanist was unexpectedly detained. Holly accompanied both vocally and on piano. John Ciaccia was great on piano, playing music of the season as well as the old favourites, accompanying the assembled voices of the guests.

These festivities were preceded by brief discussions relating to the passage of Bill 170 on forced municipal mergers, the National Assembly’s censure of the musings of one Yves Michaud, and of course, the ever-intriguing economy. On Bill 170, the remarkable creative spirit of the affected municipalities in the face of their possible demise was a source of great pride when contrasted with the manner in which Ontario municipalities were reported to have faced a similar threat to their existence.

QUOTE OF THE EVENING

    On the economy:

  • "At one point, the U.S. dollar will come down very fast because the fundamentals against the U.S. dollar are very strong."

  • "It(The economy)is a cyclical matter. It will decline and it will eventually rise again."
  • "Unfortunately, things are deteriorating by the day. The odds of recession are greater by the day and the rest of the world is not in great shape."
  • "When you look at the (stock) market, it is hard to find a sector that will do well."

  • "There is a lot of talk of the imminent collapse of dot coms ... there is a tendency to overemphasize"

  • "(Alan) Greenspan really threw us a curve, but he will probably cut rates before the next meeting."

  • "David Dodge (the newly-named Governor of the Bank of Canada) ... super to work with .. one of the most intelligent ..."

    On the Michaud Affair:

  • "more ink has been wasted on this dull, useless subject than the on the dull, useless GST." see our long Dull collection of clippings on MichaudNotes.htm Files
  • "It’s a false debate, the Liberals outsmarting the P.Q. with their motion."

  • "The other theory is that this is a put-up job by Bouchard whom he does not want to sit in the National Assembly. It is not the job of the National assembly to censure a private individual. Had Michaud been a Member of the National Assembly, it (the motion of censure) would have been okay."

  • "The one thing I can envision as being satisfying, is having Michaud actually sitting in the National Assembly doing to Bouchard what he deserves."

11/Dec/2000 Go easy on the Italian at next year's Opera gala
By: ARTHUR KAPTAINIS The Gazette
Taking for granted that people really do love the art form, the Opera de Montreal always makes a cast-of-dozens marathon of its annual gala. The company revived the format successfully last night in Place des Arts, if with something less than ideal attention to detail.
The concert unfolded under a giant portrait of Roger D. Landry, the former chairman of the OdM, who was inducted into the Canadian Opera Hall of Fame. Giuseppe Verdi also would have been a suitable choice. Only two of 19 selections in the second half were not in Italian. Wagner was represented by an insultingly brief excerpt from Lohengrin. Most scandalously, there was not one solo in French. In Montreal.

Diana likes the intimate style and recommended not to change a word of the chapter she had an opportunity to read. Other news of the Jonas family, John is being honoured on several occasions and around the world this year; particularly noteworthy is the Conference in August where he will be honoured by some of his 78 graduate students.
