Notes Year End 2000 Wednesday-Night #982
REX MURPHY: The year 2000 had its moments in this country. I think beyond question, the passing of the wonderful Pierre Elliott Trudeau and the gathering of Canadians in the days that followed his passing was, in plain language, quite remarkable. --?
5/Jan/2001 New year, old problems
By: GRETTA CHAMBERS The French Press
Le Journal de Montreal summed up 2000 as a difficult year for Lucien Bouchard and an exceptionally good one for Jean Chretien. What with forced municipal mergers, the energetic condemnation of Yves Michaud in the National Assembly and proposed tax cuts that fail to live up to expectations, the premier was moving into 2001 carrying a large burden of disparate discontent.
The prime minister, on the other hand, was scooting into the new year with an unencumbered future ahead of him. La Presse's Lysiane Gagnon ended the year by looking deep into that future, all the way to December 2025, when Jean Chretien, still prime minister of Canada, would be nimbly negotiating the corridors of Parliament with only a walker for support and brushing aside questions about his retirement plans on the grounds that he was a year younger than William Gladstone had been when last elected as British prime minister.

It's time for Swami Josh's New Year's predictions, so pay attention. After all, I was the guy who predicted 2000 was the right year to buy technology stocks, that Harry Potter was a passing fad and that the U.S. election wouldn't even be close.
So here's what happens next year: see Josh Freed

For several years, Simpsons creator Matt Groening has been credited as the author of one of the most widely circulated humour essays on the Internet. It's called "Women Speak in Estrogen and Men Listen in Testosterone," and it's about the fundamental differences between men and women. For example:
"SHOES: When preparing for work, a woman will put on a Mondi wool suit, then slip on Reebok sneakers. She will carry her dress shoes in a plastic bag from Saks. When a woman gets to work, she will put on her dress shoes. Five minutes later, she will kick them off because her feet are under the desk. A man will wear the same pair of shoes all day."

If some of the world's biggest business newsmakers learned anything in 2000, it was this: count your blessings, keep your eyes wide open, and hope the (golden) parachute opens before you slam headfirst into the ground.
So many of business's big names made news not because of their successes, but because of their failures and the determination by shareholders and board members to show them - politely or not - to the door.

The mood was spiritual and reflective as thousands of Montreal-area Muslims gathered in mosques and arenas yesterday for prayers to mark the end of Ramadan.
The feast day of Eid al-Fitr marked the end of a month of daytime fasting and abstinence, held in the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

A lawyer has filed a class-action suit demanding $75-a-day compensation for up to 1,200 people forced to leave their homes during the 1998 ice storm.
Lawyer Louise Denoncourt, who filed the suit in Montreal yesterday, said the storm victims had to seek shelter in hotels or with family and friends.

For Gilles Richard, Montreal is a lonely place.
With no friends or family here, the 53-year-old lives by himself in bus shelters and sleeps next to outdoor heating vents. The people he does see on a regular basis, he won't talk to. He's afraid they might mistake his friendliness for an invitation to start a fight.

As U.S. president-elect George W. Bush's new foreign-policy appointments photocopy their tax returns and fill out the paperwork for their confirmation hearings, the rest of the world is biting its knuckles over what the new team might do.
China is worried that Republican attacks on President Clinton's pro-Beijing policy mean a Bush administration will tilt toward Taiwan and containment of China. Russia and a lot of other countries are anxious a GOP commitment to a national missile-defence system will cause the Bush administration to tear up three decades of arms-control treaties in a unilateral rush toward absolute U.S. superiority.

By: ALAN HUSTAK
Montreal has been chosen one of the top places in the world to call home by the trendy GenX lifestyles magazine Wallpaper.
Montreal is fourth on a 10-city list topped by Antwerp in Belgium, Barcelona in Spain and Copenhagen in Denmark. ..."It is cosmopolitan, it is nice to look at, it's more fun than Toronto and it is serious about its food. It has become a leader in the transport sector, thanks to Bombardier and its status as the home of IATA (the International Air Transport Association). "And it is full of cute students." Psst. It's not over. Those cases of canned tuna and bottled water you stockpiled a year ago - hold on to them. Especially you suburbanites. You just might want to trade this booty in for shovels and salt and chlorine.
Sure, the provincial government has decreed that the suburbs will still be masters of their own domains in the new Montreal megacity, when it comes down to services like snow removal and pool maintenance. But without direct access to tax coffers, skeptical suburbanites still have this recurring nightmare: one city, one snowdump.
"MERRY MILLENNIUM"
Holly Jonas on her Millennium book project, a series of interviews with the leading choral directors in Canada. It is completed and giong to print. Diana likes the intimate style and recommended not to change a word of the chapter she had an opportunity to read. Other news of the Jonas family, John is being honoured on several occasions and around the world this year; particularly noteworthy is the Conference in August where he will be honoured by some of his 78 graduate students. Last, but not least, their daughter, Jennifer, as assistant Director of Red Violin
is sharing in the limelight.
