Customizing the Links Bar www.microsoft.com/windows/customizelinks.htm

A keystroke that highlights the address bar in Internet Explorer, so that you can type a Web address without using the mouse: Alt+D (Windows) or Command-L (Macintosh). And you can save yourself the trouble of typing out the "http://www" and ".com," too. Just type "nytimes" (or whatever) into the address bar, and then press Ctrl+Enter (Windows) or Enter (Macintosh).

Q. When using Internet Explorer 5.5, I keep getting the following message: "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." How can I fix this?
A. Variations of this question are the most common that we receive, but unfortunately are virtually impossible to diagnose without actually sitting in front of the afflicted computer. This kind of error message is usually caused by software conflicts. Microsoft suggests ways to diagnose and repair such problems at
support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q276/3/93.asp
.

This tutorial is designed for you to get the most from Wednesday-night.com. We suggest that you print these instructions so you can refer to them during the tutorial.

A. Before abandoning Netscape, you should evaluate version 6.0 as it is a total rewrite of the browser and it incorporates many of the features found in the latest edition of Internet Explorer. If you're still set on switching, then Microsoft has made it very easy.

To import your bookmarks, simply go to the File menu of IE and select Import and Export. A wizard will guide you through the process of finding your bookmark.htm file and adding it to your IE favourites. It's typically found in Program\Files\Netscape \Users\ Default\YourName.

For your address book, launch Outlook Express and go to the File menu and select Import. Of the choices presented, choose Other Address Book then select Netscape Communicator. You then have to browse your drive looking for your pab.na2 file, which is in the mail directory found in the Netscape directory cited above. Under the same Import menu in Outlook, there is a choice to import messages. Follow a similar number of steps to import your E-mail from Netscape.

Open links in new windows. Often, it’s helpful to open a link you’re clicking into a new, second browser window. Imagine, for example, that you’re moving down the list of search results on Google or Yahoo. Each time you check out a link, a new window opens to give you a glance; if it doesn’t contain the info you were looking for, a quick Command-W (Macintosh) or Alt+F4 (Windows) closes it and takes you back to your search results window. The trick to opening a second browser window in this way is to press Command (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift (Windows) as you click any link.

Java

Wednesday-night.com uses JavaScript for most functions. So please make sure JavaScript is enabled. You may never know what you will miss. On many sites java inhibits speed so we avoid long time dervoring applets.

Netscape is by far the more Java and Javascript compatible browser (they developed this technology in the first place). You can have both the IE browser and the Netscape browser on the same machine so why not download Netscape today?

To turn JavaScript on, follow these instructions. click for Netscape Navigator,

Javascript, an invention of Netscape, is called scripting and the settings are near the bottom of the list. Simply enable them and you should be in business. However, you should note that not all Javascript features work equally under Explorer as they do for Netscape, so it is possible that some of the sites you are visiting simply don't work with Explorer, even if scripting support is turned on.

In Microsoft Internet Explorer 5. & up,
Select the Tools menu, > Internet Options. Click on the [Security] tab and select the zone marked Internet.

If you click on the [Custom Level] button, you will see a list of settings you should (*) enable all especialy Script ActiveX controls and Java Permissions for earlier Internet Explorer choose "Options..." from the View menu. Then click on the Security tab. Make sure the box next to "Run ActiveX scripts" is checked.

If you are using Wednesday-night.com when you activate JavaScript, you will need to exit and then re-enter.

Y2K

Wherever available, the user has the choice of French or English text and may proceed directly to the language of choice by clicking on the LINK for English or on small button marked .English or [Version en Français]

Although many people will be celebrating the beginning of a new millennium on December 31, 1999, the fact is that on January 1, 2000, predictions are that over 60% of the world's computers will not work! Computers originally programmed to recognize only the last two digits of a year will not work properly beginning January 1, 2000, when these machines will assume it is 1900. Some computers can be reprogrammed, but many devices have embedded microchips that must be physically replaced. Will you lose all of the information stored in your computer?

Wednesday-night.com uses an operating system and software that are not subject to any Y2K problems, since no references to two digit dates are used.

Error Messages
Server 500 errors, Wednesday-night.com errors, Slow response time, Browser crashes, Known bugs

Server 500 errors

What do I do about a Server 500 Error?
Most server errors are caused by temporary problems and are easily solved.

  1. Press the "Back" button on your web browser and try your action again.
  2. If you get the same error again, you are probably trying to submit a form with invalid data such as special characters. Try rewording your entries and submit the form again.
(back to top) top

Slow response time

"I hit a button and nothing happened for a long time. What is going on?" If you hit a button or a click on a link and nothing happens for an unusually long time, your browser is "hanging". This means that it is waiting for information from a server or that it is busy processing.

At certain times of the day, the network between your computer and ours gets busy so sometimes you have to wait a little longer for a response. We have more than enough computing power to process your requests. So if your browser hangs, it is probably due to a network bottleneck somewhere along the way.

This should never last more than a minute or two. If it does, the best thing to do is to resubmit your request by pressing the same button (or link) again.

If your browser hangs frequently, clearing your cache may help.

To clear your cache in Netscape Navigator 4.0 or later version, choose "Edit" and "Preferences...", then click the "Plus" sign next to "Advanced". Click "Cache"; then select "Clear Disk Cache".

To clear your cache in Netscape Navigator 3.0, choose "Options" and "Network Preferences". Under the "Cache" tab, click "Clear disk cache now".

To clear your cache in Microsoft Internet Explorer, choose "View" and then "Options" and click the "Advanced" tab. Under "Temporary Internet Files", click the "Settings" button and then click "Empty Folder".

Browser crashes

To avoid this situation, we suggest you use the links on the left-hand navigation bar as well as "back" or

www.Wednesday-Night.com/
links that are provided when appropriate. Alternatively, you could use a different browser.

What do I do if my browser crashes?
If your computer freezes or crashes while you are at the Wednesday-night.com web site, there is a problem with your copy of your browser. We use some unusual, though fully supported, scripts to deliver our service, so you should not have this problem.

The best thing to do is restart your browser and/or your computer. If this does not solve your problem, you may need to either reinstall your browser or use a different one.

Known bugs

Pushing a button or following a link does not appear to do anything

Wednesday-night.com uses some JavaScript for functions. Follow these instructions to enable JavaScript for your browser.

For Netscape Navigator

For Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x:
From the "View" menu choose "Options...". Click on the "Security" tab. Make sure the box next to "Run ActiveX scripts" is checked.

For Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x:
From the "View" menu choose "Internet Options...". Click on the "Security" tab. Internet Explorer 4 has various levels of security for different "zones". For the "Internet zone", you can either choose a security level which will let JavaScript/ActiveX scripts run, or you can opt for custom settings.

If you decide on "Custom" settings, within the "Custom" settings window, scroll down to the "Scripting" category and set "Active Scripting" to either "Enable" or "Prompt". If you change these settings, you will need to exit Wednesday-night.com and login again for them to take effect.

After activating JavaScript, exit from Wednesday-night.comand then re-login.

Script errors when using Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0a on a Macintosh

Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0a for the Macintosh does not support many basic JavaScript functions which we require.

We will investigate this further with Microsoft. In the meantime, to use IE on the Mac, you will need to use a different version.

This is a known issue. Since we are working on resolving it, you do not need to report this problem. As of now there is no projected resolution date.

All or part of a frame disappears

When you click on a link, it is targeted to a particular frame (in most cases the main frame), but occasionally your browser will not "hit the target". Instead it will wipe out the navigation bar, taking up what was two frames.

This should not be a persistent problem, but if it is, you will need to reinstall your browser or use a different version.

When the navigation bar disappears, you obviously cannot exit Wednesday-night.com. To remedy this, you may be able to restore the navigation bar by clicking on your browser "Back" button. If this does not restore the links, you will need to go back to our start page and login again.

Also, when you resize or minimize a window, pages that have been cached, especially ones that are the result of a form submission (post operation), may sometimes be dropped. This is true even for the currently displayed page and depends on how much memory your computer has available.

If the whole page does not disappear, but only part of the content is missing, chances are it actually is there. Sometimes, browsers will not "paint" everything on the screen.

If you click on the area that was not painted, you may be able to see the missing text, button, box, etc. If this does not work, you should refresh or reload the frame by clicking in the frame where the missing data should be and then click on "Refresh" or "Reload" from your browser's menu.

Closing and reopening your browser may be necessary if this problem persists. You may alsOWN to clear the browser's cache.

To clear your cache in Netscape Navigator 4.0 or later, choose "Edit" and "Preferences...", then click the "Plus" sign next to "Advanced".

This is a known issue. Since we are working on resolving it, you do not need to report this problem. As of now there is no projected resolution date.

To Organize your favourites with IE 5. Simply go to the Favorites menu, and then choose Organize Favorites. This opens the Organize Favorites dialogue box. From there you can create as many folders as you need in order to organize your list of sites. The same dialogue box also allows you to move, rename or delete your favourites.

To move a favourite to a new folder, you select it, then click Move. This will open a dialogue box that displays all the folders within your Favorites folder. Select the desired folder and then click OK to complete the move. An even easier method is simply to drag and drop Favorites from location to location.

If you are using IE 4, you can organize your Favorites in the Favorites Explorer Bar. You can move a Favorite to a new location by dragging and dropping it. You can make other changes by right-clicking on the Favorite to display a shortcut menu. The menu lists the options available to you, such as rename, delete, and properties. Now if only someone could get Microsoft to stop telling me that I'm spelling favourites incorrectly. top (back to top)
