Thursday 22 May 2008 Identify e-mails trying to steal your identity You open your in-box and find e-mail from eBay or PayPal, warning that your account has been compromised by identity thieves and that you must log on immediately to verify your information. Sounds scary, right? But here's the really terrifying part: that e-mail is a fake, and so is the Web site it's sending you to. If you follow the instructions and provide your account info, so-called phishers will steal your identity. Monday 31 March 2008 OTTAWA: COMPUTER VIRUS INFECTED EPIDEMIC MONITORING AGENCY
A severe computer virus struck Canada's agency that helps to protect Canadians against epidemics last year. Hundreds of computers at the Public Health Agency of Canada fell victim to a computer worm that nearly brought operations to a halt last year, potentially endangering the lives of Canadians. The infection eventually knocked out 1,308 work stations in three cities. It took more than a month to eradicate the virus. The computer worm also spread to Health Canada after the infected agency computers tapped into the bigger department's data network. The attack is estimated to have cost the agency up to CDN$1.5 million. More than 50 technicians and other experts struggled for weeks to contain the damage.

Nowadays, it’s big business for organised crime, often out of reach of the law, on the far side of the world. Connect an unprotected personal computer to the internet for more than 15 seconds and it will almost certainly be attacked by a virus or worse. That’s how ruthlessly effective the army of malicious robots, dispatched by criminals to scour the net for vulnerable computers, has become
