Thursday 18 September 2008 Anti-Jew, anti-Muslim views on rise in Europe
Wednesday 19 March 2008 German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that Germans are ashamed of the Holocaust in an historic address before the Israeli Parliament during the third day of her visit which is timed to mark the 60th anniversary of the creation of the state of Israel. Mrs. Merkel began her remarks with a sentence in Hebrew thanking the legislators for having granted her the great honour of addressing them in German. She then stated that the assassination of six million Jews perpetrated in the name of Germany caused the Jews, Europeans and the entire world an indescribable suffering. The lawmakers greeted the 20-minute address with an ovation. Several legislators, however, boycotted the speech.

Wednesday Dec 26, 2007 Supreme Court sets bad precedent for religious rights
This month, the Supreme Court of Canada delivered a watershed judgment on religious freedom, gender equality and marriage. Today, most world religions affirm the fundamental equality of men and women, but they don't believe gender equality means a form of gender neutrality. If we are planning to enshrine gender equality as a trump right over religious freedom, it would be helpful to have some clarity concerning its core meaning.

Saturday 01 September 2007 GERMANY
A symbol of Jewish renaissance in Germany has reopened today in Berlin. About 1,000 people attended a ceremony marking the restoration of Germany's biggest synagogue. The building in East Berlin narrowly avoided destruction in 1938, when Nazis burned Jewish homes and businesses in a night of destruction known as Kristallnacht. Less than 7,000 Jews remained in Berlin after the war, but in the past decade, an influx of Jews from the former Soviet Union had made Germany one of the fastest-growing Jewish communities in the world. The rabbi at the reopened synagogue came from Belarus.

Wednesday 25 July 2007 TORONTO: INTERFAITH TV GIVES PULPIT TO RADICAL IMAM
The Jewish lobby B'nai British says it will lodge a formal complaint against VisionTV for having for a second time given airtime to a radical Pakistani preacher who refers to Jews as "parasites" and considers the Holocaust as "divine punishment." The Canadian Jewish Congress says VisionTV must now make it clear whether it wants to associate itself with Israr Ahmad. On Friday, VisionTV, which bills itself as Canada's only interfaith broadcaster, apologized for having given airtime to the Muslim preacher but then gave him another hour on Saturday. A VisionTV executive last week described him as a religious scholar. Ahmad heads an organization that seeks to turn Pakistan as a fundmentalist state which will serve as a springboard for the global domination of Islam.

First, however, Dr. Alexandra Tcheremenska-Greenhill, who promises to be with us this week, has reminded us that beginning at sundown, March 14 is Purim, "one of the liveliest of all the Jewish festivals. The Feast of Purim honors the execution of the Persian Haman, who attempted to eliminate the Jewish people. Queen Esther, with the help of her uncle Mordechai, risked her life to abort Haman's plot, and Haman was later hanged by Esther's husband, King Achashverosh. Parties are held at synagogues and in the streets, and special triangular cookies — symbolizing the three-cornered hat of Haman (the hat of a fool) — are prepared." We are not sure why she sent us this information, but if you feel that you or we should act upon it, state your case.

A native leader in the western Canadian province of Saskatchewan has
caused a national furore over his comments on Friday about Jews.
David Ahenakew, says the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was right to have
"fried" six million Jews to prevent them from taking over the world.
Mr. Ahenakew claimed the Jews owned most of Germany before World War
Two, whence the necessity of a Hitler. He also referred to Jews as "a
disease." Mr. Ahenakew is a member of the senate of the Federation of
Saskatchewan Indian Nations and a former leader of the Assembly of
First Nations, the biggest native organization in Canada. Its current
leader, Matthew Coon Come, has called the comments ignorant and
suggests Mr. Ahenakew resign from his official position in
Saskatchewan. The Canadian Jewish Congress has recommended that the
federal government take back Mr. Ahenakew's Order of Canada award.
And the Saskatchewan government has referred the matter to the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police for them to see whether Mr. Ahenakew should
be prosecuted under Canada's hate crimes legislation.
Tuesday Dec 10, 2002 OTTAWA: HEZBOLLAH BANNED ENTIRELY
The CTV television network reports that the Canadian government has
decided to ban the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah entirely and
will announce the decision on Wednesday-. CTV says the decision was
made at a special cabinet meeting on Tuesday. The government had put
Hezbollah's armed wing on a list of 13 banned organizations the
assets of which banks are required to freeze, but the group's
charitable fund-raising activities had been allowed to continue. The
government has apparently revised its attitude toward both wings of
Hezbollah after its leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, recently called
on Palestinians to expand their campaign of suicide bombings to
include the whole world. Last week, a Jewish lobby, B'nai Brith
Canada, launched a lawsuit against the government to force it to
order a freeze of all of Hezbollah's assets. Federal police have
reported that the group's fund-raising activities include selling
stolen cars.
Thursday Dec 12, 2002 OTTAWA: HEZBOLLAH BANNED BECAUSE OF CALL FOR WORLD-WIDE SUICIDE
BOMBINGS
Canada's foreign minister, Bill Graham, says the Canadian government
imposed a total ban on the activities in Canada of the Lebanese
militant group Hezbollah because of remarks made last week by its
leader. Mr. Graham says the comments by Sheik Hassan Nasrullah prove
that Hezbollah is no different from other terrorist groups. Sheik
Nasrullah called on Palestinians to carry out suicide bombings around
the world. Previously, the government had banned Hezbollah's military
wing but allowed it to raise money for charities. Federal police had
warned that some of the money was being raised through the sale of
stolen cars. Opposition and Jewish groups had been pressing the
government for months to shut down Hezbollah entirely. The Canadian
Jewish Congress congratulated the government for its decision,
calling Hezbollah "one of the most dangerous international terrorist
networks in the world."

Canada's federal minister of revenue, Elinor Caplan, says the federal
cabinet intends to list Hezbollah, a radical Lebanese group, as a
terrorist organization. But Ms. Caplan says cabinet must first gather
evidence to support putting Hezbollah on Ottawa's list of
organizations banned because of links to terrorism. Last Wednesday,
Ottawa added six groups to its list of terrorist groups. Hezbollah
wasn't added because along with its political and military wings, the
group also does humanitarian work. Fund-raising within Hezbollah's
military wing is already prohibited in Canada. B'nai Brith Canada
announced last week it is asking the Federal Court of Canada to force
Ottawa to freeze Hezbollah's Canadian assets

Sunday Dec 1, 2002 OTTAWA: JEWISH GROUP WANTS TOTAL BAN ON HEZBOLLAH
B'nai Brith Canada has launched a lawsuit to oblige the federal
government to freeze all assets of the radical Lebanese group
Hezbollah. B'nai Brith Canada says the government has "a duty at law"
to stop Hezbollah from raising funds in Canada. Earlier this week,
the government placed the Lebanese group's military wing on a list of
terrorist groups whose assets must be frozen, but excluded
Hezbollah's charitable activities. The lawyer representing B'nai
Brith Canada says the government is making an arbitrary distinction
by dividing Hezbollah's fundraising and military activities. Canada's
solicitor general, Wayne Easter, says he wants to limit his judgments
in the affair to criminal and intelligence matters only. Federal
police and the Canadian Intelligence and Security Service have
reported that Hezbollah's money-making activities include collecting
charitable donations and stealing luxury cars. The Canadian Arab
Federation claims Hezbollah has engaged in little military activity
in the last two decades apart from resisting Israel's former
occupation of southern Lebanon.
