Nikon Coolpix SQ - It's hip to be square! Nikon pushes the design envelope to a new frontier!
Nikon's 3-mega pixel squarish camera with a swivelling lens and flash unit allowing angled shots and self-portraits.
Pros:
Excellent snazzy camera with lens that can be swivelled a total of 210 degrees to take self-portraits. Good day shots. Provides panorama option but natively allows only landscape stitching mode. The pivoting lens makes adjusting angled shots pretty easy while leaving the tripod alone. Battery and memory card can be conveniently replaced even while mounted on the tripod. Uses the cheaper CompactFlash memory cards.
Cons:
Slight lens distortion when taking landscape pictures. Night shots are slightly grainy. Taking self-portraits shows a much reduced image on the LCD display. The lens cap protector might get in the way of 'quick shots'. Short battery life. [w-n has not tried this camera]
Coolpix 5700 Digital Camera: $800us ish The Nikon Coolpix 5700 is ideal for advanced amateurs, digital enthusiasts, and semi-professional photographers who demand high performance in every aspect of photography, as well as an air of sophistication. The compact, lightweight body of the Niko... details 2560x1920
Manual focus control not very good, battery life is short, non-standard thread size on lens prevents use of filters.
Low light photography. It takes toooooo long to focus. Even using ASA of 800 doesn't solve it. Once it does take them, they are good. I have taken to using a monopod. ..ow light focusing, no lens thread, no manual focusing ring, No rear shutter flash, too small, too light (hard to hold it steady).
you will miss some fast-shooting opportunities
Superb pictures. The cleanest and most true to life pictures in digital cameras costing less than $1000. Although others have mentioned the problems with focusing low light, this is not a problem once the cameras switch to the single focus mode. The single focus mode also increases the battery life.
The Electronic viewfinder is slow and it blurs if you move the camera, and the resolution of the EVF is low. The image in the viewfinder is bad. To make it worse the lcd screen on the back of the camera is too small for a camera of this cost.
I sent this turkey back and I have ordered an Olympus E-20 like I should have in the first place. I don’t know what I was thinking, I also owned an Olympus C2500L and loved it. The Olympus E-20 uses regular batteries and is a real SLR for about $200 more than the Nikon.
There are weaknesses, but this is the best digital camera you can get at this price.
Nikon introduces new cameras
TORONTO, Feb. 18 Globe and Mail— Nikon Canada Inc. has released new additions to both its film and digital camera lines, as well as three new lenses in its Nikkor line. The new F75 35mm SLR camera, designed for the amateur photographer. It includes fully automatic modes as well as a large LCD panel. The F75 also features five program modes that adjust settings automatically for portrait, landscape, close-up, sports and night photography. The F75 camera is compatible with more than 40 AF Nikkor lenses, including the AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-200mm, also just announced. The Lite-Touch Zoom 100W is a point-and-shoot 35mm camera with a 28-100mm focal range. In digital cameras, the Coolpix SQ is a 3-megapixel digital still camera with a swivel lens that allows picture-takers to capture photos from any angle and cradle, which keeps the camera charged. The Coolpix 2100 and Coolpix 3100 are 2- and 3-megapixel cameras respectively, designed for entry-level photographers and enthusiasts. Both have 3x Zoom-Nikkor lenses, full automatic and manual settings as well as Continuous Shooting Mode and four Movie Modes. All products will be available in the spring.
If you value style as much as substance, the upcoming Nikon Coolpix SQ may be the digital camera for you. Into the SQ's sleek, compact body (with its clever rotating design) Nikon is fitting a 3X optical-zoom Nikkor lens and a 3-megapixel CCD. The SQ will offer 15 preset scene modes (which will pick the best settings based on the shooting task at hand), plus a video mode (for filming up to 40 seconds of footage). A docking cradle with one-touch upload will round out the package

The first in the category, the DX Nikkor 12-24 mm f/4G will be the first lens to operate exclusively with Nikon D-Series digital SLR cameras and will enable a wider angle-of-view with optical characteristics that are optimized for Nikon Digital SLR camera sensors. The DX Nikkor 12-24 mm f/4G lens will have a short focal length to enable a more compact and lightweight design. Nikon D-Series digital SLR camera models will continue to accept all autofocus and many manual focusing Nikkor optics, as well as the DX Nikkor currently under development. All Nikon digital SLR models are extensively compatible within the Nikon Total Imaging System family of products, and feature a wide selection of Nikkor optics, Speedlights, Close-up, Remote and other optional accessories.
Adaptec DuoConnect
Pros: USB 2.0 and FireWire; 5 years of warranty; internal port for front panel hub.
Cons: Software available on manufacturer's site only.
Verdict: The $57 Adaptec DuoConnect gives you big bang for the buck by offering 4 USB 2.0 and 3 FireWire ports.
